Re: how to add external url for autodiscover

no, im referring to this idea. so i was expecting to find something in the admin console to set the external url for the gms instead of having to use the hostname.

Could you give us an example of what you'd like to see, so that we
understand what you are looking for.
Part of what will be required is that your GMS have a resolvable name that
part of the process points to.
So for putting in an email address of example@mydomain.com with gms being
at gms.mydomain.com (or could be mobility@otherdomain.com)
What would this url look like and where would you use it? Active Sync
expects the server name even if it has multiple aliases.

Re: how to add external url for autodiscover

for having autodiscover work externally the gms servers hostname which hast mostly a local domain name, has to have public domain name. i want to get rid of the necessity to name your gms server domain different from the rest of your domain computers.
example: your local domain is mydomain.local. your gms is named gms.mydomain.local. what happens is, that the autodiscover will fill in gms.mydomain.local instead of a public domain like mydomain.com. thats why you need an option preferably in the gms admin console to set an external domain name for the gms server instead of messing around with its hostname. outlook has this feature. and since gms is really *****y concerning hostname changes this option will help alot.

if that doesn't convince you, you can probably tell me what to do when the external domain name changes. the local domain name should not be changed 😉

Re: how to add external url for autodiscover

Hi,

I've taken a much closer look at the documentation link I sent you. I see this:

your_gms_server.yourdomain

Or

your_external_nat/port_forward.yourdomain

This tells me that externally it is no longer tied to the gms server name. Perhaps I'm mistaken?

Re: how to add external url for autodiscover

i think nat in this context just means, that the autodiscover request is forwarded to an internal host behind a firewall. same as i do right now. my gms is behind a firwall so need to nat port 443 in order to have autodiscover working. right now my hosts file holds 2 entries for the gms server the local name and the public name. the hostname file has only the public name.

my request in the ideas portal was to have the autodiscover service name detachted from hostname. which can be realized by setting up and external url for the local gms server. but i more and more keep thinking that i'm talking about something different 😞

Where in Outlook? Outlook is just a client, and when it is using
Active Sync, it gets picky as well. Other aspects of GroupWise have
this sort of functionality as well.

A lot of it is Active Sync itself and how some clients are more picky
than others about TLS implementations. By being picky, they are just
asking that it be done right, with all the i's dotted and the t's
crossed which is where a lot of the pain is.

Re: how to add external url for autodiscover

sry meant exchange not outlook. you can set an external domain name for autodiscover and don't have to worry about how you have to name your exchange server. hostname is blabla.domain.local. for autodiscover you set the external domain on owa.domain.com and all clients work. that easy.

Ah, that makes much more sense, and now I see the part that they got from
your Idea and what they missed.
Ignore autodiscovery for a moment as that is a separate thing that is now
an option.
If I am understanding you, you want GMS to be able to seamlessly have 2
host names, an internal(private) one as well as an external(public) one
just like a GroupWise POA can have both an internal and external IP
address and this is baked into the system.
There are still TLS certificate issues relating to this, but being able
to have the two identities (private and public) a part of the system
would require that bit of the cert building to be better fleshed out.

The external host name will also be a part of the autodiscovery process,
but talking about autodiscovery at the same time as trying to articulate
internal vs external host names was distracting from the essence of the
Idea.

they implemented the autodiscovery bits, which many people do want, so
you got half way there.
The autodiscovery parts were largely done, which is why they fixated on
that part of that Idea as they finished autodiscovery and missed the
essence of what that Idea and you were looking for.

Right now GMS itself is almost hostname agnostic, but reality requires
that we have hostnames to work with, real hostnames for both internal and
external needs. So for now that messing with hostnames is a very manual
process. Hmmm that gives me some ideas to pursue.

Re: how to add external url for autodiscover

Hi,

I've just confirmed that auto discover is not tied to the server host name in the GMS 14.2.2.

that's great news. but i have no idea where to set the external hostname which will be set on the mobile devices. in the end you have to nat the external request to a local server. and that server needs to push the external hostname back to the mobile client.
