(CO) Support Tip: Is it supported to have the Hyper-V Collector installed on Hyper-V or SCVMM?

Hello CO Community,

There has been a question that has been asked many times by different people about the Hyper-V collection process for CO.

As you all know, it is currently necessary to install a proxy collector on a windows host to collect Hyper-V information from Hyper-V and SVCMM environments.  Many people ask if it is supported to have this proxy collector on the Hyper-V or SVCMM server itself?

The answer to this question is that while it is supported, it is not recommended.

Hyper-V and SCVMM hosts have a lot of resource demands on them.  This can cause the proxy collector to not have sufficient resources and fail to collect information consistently.

More information is included within the following knowledge article.

KM03080111 - Is it supported within Cloud Optimizer to have the Hyper-V Collector installed on the Hyper-V or SCVMM host?

I hope that this information is helpful!

Have a great week!

Regards,

Mark

Are there any sizing recommendations for a proxy host?

On a related note, we have one proxy collecting from approximately 100 Hyper-V hosts, and it seems like the collection is *very* bursty, with a huge spike in network/CPU utilization, then a significant lull between collection intervals.  Is there any way to level out this collection load across the polling interval?

Thanks,
Aaron

Hello Aaron,

Unfortunately, there are no sizing guidelines currently available for the proxy host.  It would require you reviewing the resource usage during the collection process to determine the best values.

Spreading the collection process evenly through the process would be ideal from a system resource perspective for the proxy host.  However, the proxy agent does not have that level of intelligence currently within it.  Increasing the intelligence would most likely also increase the resources required.

Both of these points are good points and you could submit two separate enhangement requests so that this information is available.

1 - Include sizing recommendations for the Hyper-V proxy host within the product documentation.

2 - Modify the Hyper-V collection process so that the resource usage is more evenly distributed over the collection interval rather than creating usage spikes.

I'm sorry that I could not provide you with better answers.

Regards,

Mark
