Shifting data center requirements and explosive data growth forces today’s IT organizations to reconsider backup and recovery processes, strategies, and infrastructure. New Hybrid IT approaches to deploying related services (from on premise to cloud and from Physical to virtual) have fundamentally changed how we tackle the challenge of deploying mission-critical applications. In addition, new trends such as mobility, bring your own device (BYOD), and an increasing focus on regulatory compliance have transformed the way we interact with the data we create.

Standard methods like adding more disk space when running out of capacity, upgrading infrastructure and increasing network bandwidth are no longer viable in today’s environment.

A modern backup solution must not only reliably protect data but must also provide capabilities to analyze and optimize it before it is backed up, then optimize backup processes to create a healthy and efficient environment. Using analytics to derive data insights is key to addressing these challenges. The data backup process itself captures a great deal of information about the data in the backup set. Leveraging this data knowledge can add value to enterprises. Today, firms harness insights from data analytics to deliver personalized customer experiences, streamline business processes, and increase operational excellence. So why aren’t we using the same methods to improve one of the most critical IT processes—backup? Operational analytics, which has been an overlooked technology in backup until now, can make data protection processes more intelligent and more efficient, resulting in lower risk, cost, and complexity.

Starting with Data Protector 10.10 (2018.09) an advanced reporting server is available and shown in the Data Protector Dashboard. It allows for overviews of resource consumption, performance data and predictive outlook, also shows SLA information like RPO/RTO.

While basic text-based reporting is generally available in DP, this Reporting Servers allows for much broader and intelligent display of resource information. It helps finding area of improvements before they become a challenging issues. It's like having half an admin already built in ... With this new functionality, Micro Focus Data Protector applies actionable insight and operational analytics to optimize backup at all phases of the data protection cycle. Our goal is to give you a 360-degree view of your backup environment to adapt and tune your processes so that they can run optimally at all times.

The advance reporting server is embedded on Data Protector Premium and Data Protector Express editions and, with the release of Data Protector 2020.05, also available as an option for traditionally licensed Data Protector Installations.

Key Benefits of the Micro Focus Data Protector

Data Protector includes a range of functionalities that enable an adaptable, smart backup and recovery environment, which can evolve with your business. As said before, the advanced reporting enables you to take action in real time, based on insights into your backup data. With an agile, adaptable backup infrastructure, you can confidently deal with the uptime challenges of your business, such as 24x7 operations, continued growth of data, technology disruptions, and increasingly demanding recovery objectives. The solution allows the customer to adapt and tune your environment to run at optimum levels.

Improved Business Resiliency and Reliability

  • Application-consistent recovery in case of downtime with native application integration.
  • Fewer error-prone manual steps through advanced ITOM integrations.

Increased Efficiency

  • Improved backup and recovery speed by only backing up data that is valuable thru different RPO/RTO policies.
  • Real-time actionable insight into backup processes including root-cause analysis and remediation.

Lower TCO

  • Thru a Simplified licensing model that provides a better control and transparency, reducing required tools and training and providing a predictable growth capability.
  • Centrally managed backup, replication and DR through a unified software and storage data protection solution that is designed, tested, purchase, delivered, and supported together.

As mentioned above, we are on a journey inside Micro Focus ITOM portfolio. Today, in most organizations, buyers for analytics are very different from buyers who seek solutions for Backup & Recovery. Managing IT environments involves a wide range of processes, from backup and recovery to reporting and monitoring to health checks, installations, and upgrades. Running these processes efficiently is key to a business’s success yet is often time-consuming and tedious. It may involve a high degree of manual intervention and in a large business, repeating certain tasks thousands of times.

Data Protector integrates with Micro Focus Operations Orchestration (OO), ITOM’s enterprise-scale IT process automation solution that helps reduce operational costs and improve service quality by automating routine tasks, such as regular maintenance, provisioning of resources, and incident resolution. OO workflows automate routine backup tasks such as provisioning clients, managing and monitoring Data Protector services, running file system backups and restores, aborting active sessions, or adding and decommissioning virtual machines.
