Product Manager, HPE SimpliVity
Sr. Product Manager, Micro Focus Data Protector
We have often heard that data is a double-edged sword. It is important for innovation and progress, but at the same time, there are significant management requirements for that data including retention, archive and protection. Protection is needed for various reasons--protection against data corruption, protection against getting into the wrong hands, and protection to provide high availability and ensure business continuity.
Since protecting data is so important, it is imperative that the technologies used for data protection are comprehensive without any gaps. They must also be simple to use in order to avoid IT teams spending time on data protection activities, and instead, focus on driving innovation and business efficiencies.
HPE SimpliVity is a powerful, hyper converged platform that provides not only native built-in data protection technology, but also delivers speed and agility for workloads running on top of it. It is a highly efficient platform and as you can see from the data below, highlighting TCO savings and reduced time spent on data protection activities.
Due to the criticality and breadth of data protection, customers have several approaches and requirements. Our objective is fulfilling those requirements for our customers. While HPE SimpliVity can achieve most use cases by itself, there may be certain use cases that are not supported natively, today. This is where our partnership with Micro Focus comes into play. Even though the company has split into Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Micro Focus, the two organizations continue to collaborate and deliver integrated solutions helping customers solve their backup and recovery problems.
So, with the converged capabilities of HPE SimpliVity, what additional value could be added by Micro Focus Data Protector? Data Protector is an enterprise grade backup and disaster recovery solution for large, complex, and heterogeneous IT environments. Built on an adaptive architecture that combines security and analytics, it enables customers to meet their continuity needs reliably and cost-effectively. It has a long pedigree of data protection and as a result has established a wide range of capabilities. It supports tape, physical, virtual and cloud media as well as protecting structured and unstructured data, operating systems, critical applications and virtual machines. This protection is delivered through a single management interface offering a customizable dashboard, integrated reporting and built in analytics.
Since the workloads will be running on HPE SimpliVity, the general rule of thumb is to use HPE SimpliVity-specific features and operations for achieving a use case that can be achieved by using HPE SimpliVity only. For example, if you are backing up from a source HPE Simplivity site to a destination HPE SimpliVity site, then it makes sense to use HPE SimpliVity data protection technology as it will be fast, efficient and free (no performance impact). However, if you are backing up between HPE SimpliVity and non-HPE SimpliVity physical or virtual environments (which is not supported natively today), Data Protector is your option. Similarly, for application specific integration and restoration of application objects, data protector would be your choice. In these heterogeneous storage environments Data Protector can be your single backup solution providing one tool with one management interface for all your backup needs.
The following diagram shows the power of HPE SimpliVity and Data Protector together:
The deep integration of Data Protector with HPE Storage products was a result of being a part of one company. That integration and collaboration continues now with a strong strategic alliance formed between the companies. As well as sharing development details at the engineering level, the products, services and support are available from each company through a commercial agreement. What this means is that for any joint solution, everything can be quoted, sourced and supported from one company making it easier to do business. And the long-term roadmap collaboration will ensure further enhancements and integrations between the products.
