Once again, it’s time for a full release version of Configuration Management System (CMS), also known as Universal Discovery (UD) and Universal Configuration Management Database (UCMDB).  The latest UD/UCMDB (CMS) release is 2019.11—following on the heels of the containerized content pack update of 2019.8 back in August.

The ‘full release” of 2019.11 focuses on extending the cloud discovery agenda, improving the user experience, and increasing efficiency.  This means new, faster ways of building reports, views, queries, and policies, along with broader cloud discovery.  Long-time users will notice changes that make administering CMS easier.  And users of UD/UCMD will enjoy end-to-end workflows for building reports that simplifies the process, making it easier to report on configuration items (CIs) in your hybrid IT environment.

Simply put, working with Universal Discovery and UCMDB just got easier and more efficient for all with Configuration Management System 2019.11!

Data Management, Visualization & Reporting Improvements

Now let’s take a quick look at some of the new and improved features that will make administering Universal Discovery and UCMDB easier.

  • New! End-to-End Flow for Building Reports, Views, Queries and Policies
This new workflow simplifies the process for new UCMDB users, as well as improves the efficiency of long-time users.
  • Improved! Report/Query Designer Work-Area
The report/query designer has been redesigned to allow for more intuitive and efficient creation and editing of views and reports. Getting the information you or your business users need is now easier!
  • Improved! IP Ranges and Credentials Management
IP ranges and credentials can now be managed from within the CMS User Interface, streamlining and greatly reducing the time spent managing these resources.
  • New! Credential Vaults

Credential vaults can now be incorporated into Universal Discovery with out-of-the-box configurations for CyberArk and HashiCorp, and documentation of how to add others.

  • New! Content Upgrade Simulation
Content simulation simplifies product upgrades by providing a report of the changes that would be incurred when deploying new content (without having to actually deploy the content).
  • New! Enterprise PostgreSQL Configuration
The ability to use a standalone deployment of PostgreSQL allows for a much higher volume of Configuration Items (CIs).
  • New! REST APIs for content deployment
CMS can now support content deployment and management through common REST APIs, as well as management of IP ranges and credentials for discovery.

Software and Hardware Discovery

Of course, each new release of Universal Discovery and UCMDB (CMS) boasts new discovery capabilities and CMS 2019.11 is no exception.  Here is a short list of part of what’s new and improved in the latest release.  A full list can be found on the documentation pages.

  • New! Nutanix Hyper-converged Virtualization Discovery and Modeling
More organizations are adopting hyper-converged infrastructures—often as pre-built appliances that combine both hypervisor (virtualization) and hardware. With the CMS 2019.11, Universal Discovery now supports the discovery and modeling of the Nuantix virtualization platform.
  • New! 64-bit macOS Agent
The latest version of the macOS 10.15 Catalina only supports 64-bit applications. The release of CMS 2019.11 makes 64-bit agents available for macOS, alongside the 32-bit agents for earlier versions of macOS.
  • Improved! Oracle LMS
Universal Discovery of Oracle audit details have been refreshed with the new requirements to ensure your data collection conforms to Oracle audit standards.

It is important to note that this short-list of new discovery capabilities only highlights a few of the many new discovery capabilities available in the CMS 2019.11 release.

You can always find out more about what’s new with Universal Discovery and UCMDB by listening to the “What’s New in Service Management Automation and Universal Discovery” webinar or by visiting our new Universal Discovery and UCMDB playlist on YouTube!

And of course: the Configuration Management System documentation pages in the IT Operations Management Practitioner’s Portal is always a valuable resource for new information about Universal Discovery and UCMDB.

With each new release of CMS, Universal Discovery and UCMDB continue to advance the vision and promise of a single-source of truth about on-premises and cloud infrastructure and software to power your enterprise’s service management, IT asset management, software asset management, and other IT operations management solutions.
