Cloud computing provides a simple way to access servers, storage, databases as well as a broad set of application services over the Internet. Cloud providers like Amazon AWS and Microsoft (MS) Azure are each popular with their rich set of services which are segregated into IaaS, PaaS, SaaS set of services.
Earlier Amazon AWS and MS Azure management packs (MP) releases monitored a rich set of metrics for the IaaS area. Now with the latest releases of AWS and Azure management packs, we have added more monitoring around the PaaS and SaaS areas. The most popular and heavily used are the database services like Amazon Relation Database Service (RDS) and MS Azure SQL Databases.
In AWS MP, we added discovery and monitoring capabilities for Amazon RDS instances and in MS Azure MP we added discovery and monitoring for MS Azure SQL Database instances. Furthermore, MS Azure MP can now monitor the Azure services running on the private cloud with Azure Stack infrastructure.
Both management packs help in monitoring all of your cloud databases without losing visibility on the performance. They provide a unified monitoring solution covering application performance, network metrics and log analytics. You will quickly know about any outages, latency, or even downward trend in availability in your cloud databases.
Key Highlights of OMi Management Pack for Amazon Web Service (version 1.40):
- Discover Amazon RDS: The management pack discovers all Amazon RDS instances along with regions and locations where the instances are running. The discovered topology can be viewed using two different Run Time Service Model (RTSM) views as shown here:
a. AWS_RDS_Account view: Shows List RDS instances based on the AWS account
b. AWS_RDS_Region view: Shows RDS instances based on the regions
- Monitor availability and performance of Amazon RDS: AWS MP continuously gathers and analyzes metrics for all your AWS RDS instances. Operators can configure thresholds for key performance indicators and get notified when the thresholds are exceeded. Key metrics include: the availability and health status of all RDS instances like reads/writes, database connections, Network traffic/latency, IOPS metrics along with standard system metrics like CPU, memory and disk usage. The screenshots below show a sample event and the performance trend for a selected Amazon RDS instance.
- Monitor AWS RDS events: The deployment of aspect “AWS RDS Event” helps you track Amazon RDS events to be notified when changes occur with a DB instance, DB cluster, DB snapshot, DB cluster snapshot, DB parameter group, or DB security group.
- Discover and Monitor Amazon Auto Scaling Groups: To handle the load of an application, AWS offers Auto Scaling groups to group Amazon EC2 instances and define the minimum number of running instances in an Auto Scaling group. To accomplish this, the AWS discovery brings in the Auto Scaling group and the corresponding Amazon EC2 instances along with the Amazon Elastic Block Storage (EBS) volumes. The aspect “AWS ASG Health” helps you to collect Auto scaling group metrics related to Min/Max group size, desired capacity and pending/standby/terminating/running/total number of Amazon EC2 instances hosted. Monitoring generates an event if Amazon EC2 instance count is less than desired capacity mentioned in the Auto scaling group and also receive an event if max size capacity percentage of running Amazon EC2 instances in an Auto scaling group is greater than or equal to 70 percentage. The screen shots below show the sample topology and event for the Amazon Auto scaling group.
Key Highlights of OMi Management Pack for Microsoft Azure (version 2.20):
- Discovery and Monitoring for MS Azure SQL Databases: Managing and tuning the performance of relational databases is a challenging task. The new feature provides the full database performance visibility on the Azure cloud. The RTSM view “MS Azure SQLDB View” lists the Azure resource groups with the Azure SQLDB. Monitoring solution aspect provides instance bases threshold as it is CI centric and pulls key metrics about database’s utilization, client connections, and resource consumption. These include CPU, storage, Network I/O including the count of deadlocks. We have out-of-the-box performance dashboard to analyze the historical performance trends of Azure SQL database servers over a period of time. Here is a screen shot with discovered Azure SQL Databases and events received for a threshold breach.
- Support for MS Azure Stack: Azure Stack is an extension of Azure, bringing the capabilities of Azure cloud computing to private cloud Azure MP already supported Azure on public cloud and now supports the private cloud “Azure Stack”. The aspect “Microsoft Azure Stack Discovery” discovers the Azure elements which can be viewed in the RTSM View “MS Azure RM Topology”. For discovery, we need to inputs for parameters like Subscription, Tenant, Client ID and Client Key, Arm Endpoint, Environment name, tools path, storage name and storage key of the account to be monitored. Here is the top view for Azure elements on Azure Stack.
- Log streaming of Activity and Windows event logs: You can use , without needing additional log collection software to stream logs to Operations Bridge Analytics (OBA) by just mentioning the OBA collector URL. This helps within log analytics on the Activity and Windows event logs collected and streamed by Operations Agent.
