Help on "Unable to open the driver specific registry key for this device" Error

Hi Guys, any one ever see above pop-up screen when the system(Windows XP Pro) got discovery agent running on it? Tried reg-monitor, the message seems generated by HPEDscan.exe.
Any input will be appreciated!

Hi

It looks like its actually a scanner error not part of the agent.

what version are you running?

Re: Help on "Unable to open the driver specific registry key for this device" Error

to veryify that the scanner is the source of the problem I would reccomend using the scan Log with the trace option

use the update model button on the top row of the device manager

In the drop down menu choose
Run Scanner

In the Detailed scanner logging field at the bottom of the page, select Trace.

see the attached picture

once you have clicked on update then the scanner will runn with the trace log option

even if the scan does not complete the scan log will still be saved and retrieved to the server.

the scan log can be viewed or retrieved from the diagnosis page in the device manager.

i would reccomend zipping the log file and posting it here

Re: Help on "Unable to open the driver specific registry key for this device" Error

We got this error when a logoff script ran.

gpedit.msc | User Config | Windows Settings | Scripts | Logoff

The batch file we call there was given the error in question multiple times when it hit two lines that began with:

shell devcon ...(etc)

We assume the user did not have rights to either the shell command or the devcon program (which we use to turn off wireless devices). We've deployed 40 of these HP 2510p laptops with this configuration and this is the first error we're gotten on this, so we are just removing the shell devcon command for now for that user and will see if it recurs.

Re: Help on "Unable to open the driver specific registry key for this device" Error

Finally find the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002bE10318

The sub key 0010/0011 which has wireless adapter under it. the "User" permission set to Read Only which caused the issue.

Thank you guys for the help!
