Can Designer be used standalone ?

Dear Vendor ,

I have joined as Business analyst for a client and need to create and
run workflows. Due to restriction i have not been provided access to
RHEL Server where client has set up NetIQ Identity solution. I need to
show to client and run workflows with Email Notification.
Is it possible to use Designer without having any other component on
my personal windows laptop?

Thanks in advance .

Best Regards
Tshepo

To design workflows you can do this in designer (standalone)

Debug without you might need a separate IDM test environment of your own as there are limitations in what simulation can do (especially in workflows)

Yes, definitely.

Policy is much easier to simulate off line, but not 100%. Workflows are
much harder. But a standalone system in a VM can be workable.

Re: Can Designer be used standalone ?

Thanks Geo . Can I synchronize Database schema for Postgres that is
install locally on my machine through policies ?
When I run project , it says ' Could not connect to server . hence
project can not run ' .
So is it possible to run only policy through IDVault that will update
Postgres schema ?

I m newbie for NetIQ products , so please excuse for vague questions if
any .

Thanks in advance.

You can make workflows offline with Designer but as soon as you want to do
real testing.

To work with IDM workflows in a test/local IDM environment you need an
IDVault (complete with userapp driver and roles and resources driver) plus
the userapp database (PostgreSQL in your case). A web app server to host
the userapp component. Plus of course designer.

Interestingly, the Postgres database is very irrelevant. 🙂 I.e. none
of the config seems to be stored in it, just the state of running
workflows.

Config and settings and stuff you care about are in the Metadirectory,
eDirectory.

So you need the IP address your eDirectory instance is listening on.

Quick summary:

IDV - Identity vault - this is just an eDirectory instance. (Think of
it as a LDAP server but with extra features).

Engine - Event detection and processing engine. Runs as a process of
eDir. This detects events as configured, sends them to each driver
thread. The driver config runs its policies against the event, with the
final event being sent to the shim.

Drivers - these are constructs whose policy flow is stored in
metadirectory, but whose actual actions are taken by the Shim to process
the XML document the engine sends them. (AD driver shim talks to AD.
Notes driver shim talks to Domino, etc). In Designer you configure the
policies of how the XML documents get handled/modified.

All that is about data sync. You seem to care about workflows.

User App - Web application that is front end to kick off and run
workflows. (Also manages RBAC stuff with Roles/Resources). This run in
Tomcat/Jboss/WebSphere. It needs a DB Postgress/MS-SQL/Oracle. But it
does not use it as much as you would expect.

A workflow takes user input in a form, then does something to "Make it
so". maybe add a Role? Maybe change an attribute in the IDV? Depends
on what you are trying to do.

So... To simulate. On one box, you need eDirectory, User App (with its
App server, and database). Then you need somewhere to connect too. So
maybe AD on a connected VM?

You design in Designer, Deploy to IDV, test in a web browser.

Re: Can Designer be used standalone ?

Thanks Alex and Geo.

What I understood is >>

For synchronizing Data for a managed application one needs

>> IDVault and ID Manage Engine to be installed .
>> Managed application installed on same server where IDV and Engine is

running . ( else one may need Remote Loader )
>> Driver for that Managed application . In my case I will require

JDBC driver for postgres .

Am I going the right path ?

Thanks

Sounds like you are. Though it wasn't clear until now that you needed to
also deal with the non userapp/workflow side of IDM. Had assumed that when
you referenced PostgreSQL it was only as the underlying database for the
userapp/RBPM part.

Re: Can Designer be used standalone ?

Yes Alex. It is only standalone PostgreSQL installed. There is NO App
that is interacting with PostgreSQL.

Thanks
