Launcher for Validator on Windows

For those of you who do not like DOS boxes too much, I've written a little
launcher tool as an alternative to runValidator.bat (sorry, not for Mac and
Linux users...). It will be published on Coolsolutions eventually (which
currently seems a little defunct), so I'll post it here until they got that
sorted out:

Launcher for NetIQ Validator

download url: https://iam.is4it.de/public/download/ValidatorLauncher.zip
license: free
home page url:
http://www.is4it.de/dienstleistungen/security/identity-access-management/

NetIQ Validator comes with launch scripts for all supported platforms
(Linux/Mac/Windows) but those are console mode shell scripts and offer not much
comfort. The Launcher for NetIQ Validator is a drop-in replacement for the
standard Windows script "runValidator.bat" that replaces the validator server
console windows with a tray menu icon and (by default) auto-launches the
validator client page. From the tray menu you can

- show/hide the server console
- open the validator client webpage
- customize the tests folder
- disable autostart of the validator client
- choose your preferred browser
- enforce use of your custom license file
- enable debug mode

To install, just copy validator.exe into the same folder where you find
runValidator.bat and run it. If you change any of the preferences from the
default values, they will be saved to a validator.ini file in the same folder.

If you buy a validator license you'll receive a license.dat file that you need
to copy into the config subfolder of your validator install. Since the
validator download comes with an evaluation license file as well this will most
likely overwrite your copy during an update. So simply keep your custom license
somewhere in a safe place outside the install folder and point the Launcher to
it - it will copy the license.dat into the right place on the fly.

This launcher has been developed for and tested with NetIQ Validator v1.1

Great Job, Lothar!
This is perfect extension for original product!

Now updated to version 0.7.3 which should work with 1.2.b634, too (added
jasperreports folder to classpath, plus some report-independent minor
improvements). Same download URL as before, still waiting for NetIQ
coolsolutions to relaunch...

Re: Launcher for Validator on Windows

When using the launcher there is an error when trying to start UserApp
workflows with beta 1.2. I'm assuming the classpath is off in the
launcher?

You would think Lothar of all people would be nit picky about details
like this. 🙂

I wish it was just easier to point a JVM ata directory and have it use
all the JAR's it finds there, instead of needing to name them all one by
one,

Hi Kent,

do you have the latest version 0.8.1? I update the download every now and then,
but the URL stays the same, maybe I should change the filename to include the
version number and/or add a "Search for updates..." menu item.

The latest launcher runs "jre/bin/java.exe -cp
lib/*;lib/ext/*;lib/enc/*;lib/jldap/*;lib/json/*;lib/junit/*;lib/mysql/*;lib/res
t/*;lib/ssl/*;lib/oracle10g/*;lib/jasperreport/*
-Dsun.net.httpserver.idleInterval="3600" com.novell.nccd.validator.RESTServer"
which I copied from the v1.2 runValidator.bat. Source is now included, so are
instructions on how to run it with AutoIt (e.g. for easier debugging) and how
to compile it.

Next on my to do list is an MRU dropdown list for test folder selection on
startup. Will save a lot of mouse mileage if you keep test suites outside the
install folder in customer-specific repos under version control.

That would be helpful!

Re: Launcher for Validator on Windows

I'll check with jonwebbstl. He was the one using it so I think he had
the latest based on his other forum post. When we had the launcher in
place we were getting something that seemed like a class not found error
when starting a workflow. After taking the launcher out we didn't get
that error and I didn't really have time to troubleshoot what was going
on. I assumed the lib path had an issue but maybe there is something
else going on.
