I have a book on all 121 tokens available in Policy builder. Lots of
examples throughout.
https://www.lulu.com/shop/search.ep?keyWords=geoffrey+carman&type=
(Validator book is at that link, but not ready, some of the images came
out really blurry and I am working on fixing).
I have written tons of articles about IDM and policy at Cool Solutions.
You can find all 425+ here, sorted by topic:
http://wiki.novell.com/index.php/Geoffrey_Carman's_personal_collection
But specifically, if you are getting started, some issues you are almost
certainly going to run into are in this series:
https://www.netiq.com/communities/cool-solutions/common-mistakes-newcomers-idm-make-part-1/
http://www.novell.com/communities/node/13057/common-mistakes-newcomers-idm-make-part-2
http://www.novell.com/communities/node/13058/common-mistakes-newcomers-idm-make-part-3
http://www.novell.com/communities/node/13125/common-mistakes-newcomers-idm-make-part-4
http://www.novell.com/communities/node/13126/common-mistakes-newcomers-idm-make-part-5
http://www.novell.com/communities/node/13302/common-mistakes-newcomers-idm-make-part-6
http://www.novell.com/communities/node/13316/common-mistakes-newcomers-idm-make-part-7
http://www.novell.com/communities/node/13347/common-mistakes-newcomers-idm-make-part-8
http://www.novell.com/communities/node/13383/common-mistakes-newcomers-idm-make-part-9
http://www.novell.com/communities/node/13486/common-mistakes-newcomers-idm-make-part-10
http://www.netiq.com/communities/coolsolutions/common-mistakes-newcomers-to-idm-make-part-11/
Beyond that, hard to recommend anything in particular. If you are not
comfortable with the driver event flow, what happens in what policy set,
and which channel, then stop and read this first:
https://www.netiq.com/communities/cool-solutions/guided-tour-novell-identity-manager-2/
https://www.netiq.com/communities/cool-solutions/guided-tour-novell-identity-manager-3/
https://www.netiq.com/communities/cool-solutions/guided-tour-novell-identity-manager/
Then read Fernando's article (NTS guy, colleague of Aaron's (ab of the
forum fame)) on how to read Dstrace:
https://www.netiq.com/communities/cool-solutions/capturing-and-reading-novell-identity-manager-traces/
https://www.netiq.com/communities/cool-solutions/comprehending-idm-traces-part-1/

Hi Denny,
It will be pretty hard to point you to one source of information, but I
will try:
1. This is maybe funny advice, but you just have to start build the
rules. (experience)
2. Our forum is very valuable source of info (and help)
3. Cool Solutions
4. Geoffrey Carman books. (Actually Geoffrey covered all these areas)
5. IDM Advanced Technical Training cources are pretty good
6. New 3129 Course "Identity Manager 4.5 Customization and Roles"
7. 3127 NetIQ Identity Manager 4.5 Engine Implementation and
Administration 2 /3128 NetIQ Identity Manager 4.5 Application
Implementation, Administration and Governance 1 Courses

NetIQ has some pretty good online documentation
(https://www.netiq.com/documentation/idm402). On building policies this
one in particular has proven useful to me: http://tinyurl.com/joxwm8s.
Furthermore there are some self-study kits available, e.g. SSK-3109,
SSK-3110.
This is all 4.02 but the principle of policy building is the same and
i'm sure the same sort of documentation is available for 4.5.

Hi,
since there are no "official" self-study kits available dealing with IDM
4.5.x it could make sense to use at least the SSK's mentioned above even
to get a better understanding of IDM 4.5. Either kit contains a quite
complex manual and a workbook providing step-by-step labs.
For IDM 4.5 there are "only" online and instructor led classes 3127,
3128 and (soon) 3129 available. They focus on IDM 4.5, but do not
provide such a detailed and complex class manual - so the material is
not so good for self study.
Regards,
Thorsten
