For which SAP driver, specifically? I believe the communication TO SAP is
usually HTTP-based, and info from SAP often comes in the form of iDocs.
I've integrated with SAP UM in the past using CSV files because that's
what the SAP folks wanted to give me, but that was a one-way sync from
them to IDM.

SAP-HCM/HR uses iDoc from SAP to IDM and RFC calls via JCo2/3 to set values in
SAP and to perform queries.
SAP-UM can use iDocs and RFC from SAP to IDM and also uses JCo2/3 to write
to/query SAP
SAP-Portal is unidirectional IDM to SAP and uses SPML over HTTP, AKFAIK

JCo2/3 is also known as BAPI. If that helps.

iDoc = Intermediate Document, a text file format to exchange data between SAP
and external systems (actually the by far most complicated text file format
I've ever run into.)

RFC = Remote Function Call, SAP lingo for RPC (Remote Procedure Call) and their
way of calling programming interfaces over network connections, usually on
TCP/33xx.

BAPI = Business Application Programming Interface, the endpoints SAP offers to
connect and trigger actions

JCo = SAP Java Connector, a Java library implementing RFC calls to SAP BAPIs.
Provided by SAP to be used by 3rd party application like IDM. Earlier IDM shims
used JCo version 2, all current shims are based on JCo v3.
