Remote Loader - error loading JVM

Dear Netiq community

on configuring a new Remote Loader/New Instance on a Windows 2012 R2
Standard x64 the error 'DirXML Remote Loader - Error loading JVM' is
thrown in a popup window when initially starting the instance.
Each of the java Driver Shims throws the exact same error, only the
AD.dll Driver Shim can be started successfully.

We tried to install 32 and 64 bit. Identity Manager version is 4.5.

Configfile:
-description "IDM3JDBC-TEST2"
-commandport 8002
-connection "port=8102"
-trace 4
-tracefile "C:\Novell\RemoteLoader\IDM3JDBC-TEST2-Trace.log"
-tracefilemax 0M
-class "com.novell.nds.dirxml.driver.jdbc.JDBCDriverShim"

What we were able to figure out on checking the jre/lib is that
*-Djava.endorsed.dirs=C:\Novell\RemoteLoader\jre\lib\endorsed* is not
existing in the directory!

Any ideas out there what we are missing? We've tried everything that
came to our mind.

Thanks a lot and devastated regards,
Katharina

Have you applied one of the 4.0.2 engine/remote loader patches that
upgrades the JRE?

We've seen that the patch can fail to update the JRE and leaves the RL in a
broken state when you run the patch from a path that contains long names
and/or spaces.

If you took a file backup of the RL then you can try to revert and re-patch
from a simpler path.

Otherwise uninstall and reinstall then repatch.

Thanks for your reply.

We use IDM 4.5 and it is a complete new installation without any patches
or updates applied.
Do you know of any problems with version 4.5?

Re: Remote Loader - error loading JVM

Hi harinjka,
I'm not sure if you really need *java.endorsed.dirs* settings:

By Java documentation, *java.endorsed.dirs* is used to provide an
*Endorsed Standards Override Mechanism*. Which means, a user can provide
newer versions of certain packages than those provided by the JDK. If
there are newer implementations of these packages in the directories
specified by java.endorsed.dirs, those implementations will be loaded
instead of the default ones that come with the JDK.
The packages that can be overriden this way are grouped into Endorsed
Standards APIs and Standalone Technologies, and are listed in the Java
documentation.
Roughly speaking the Endorsed Standards APIs include:

- javax.rmi.CORBA
- various org.omg.* packages
- org.w3c.dom
- various org.xml.sax.* packages

Standalone Technologies include:

- Java API for XML Processing (JAXP), version 1.4
- Java Architecture for XML Binding (JAXB), version 2.0
- Java API for XML-Based Web Services (JAX-WS), version 2.0
- Java Compiler API, version 1.0
- Pluggable Annotation Processing API, version 1.0
- Common Annotations for the Java Platform, version 1.0
- Scripting for the Java Platform, version 1.0
- SOAP with Attachments API for Java (SAAJ), version 1.3

Re: Remote Loader - error loading JVM

If you still want to make no changes in Java configuration - you can
create new *endorsed* folder in C:\Novell\RemoteLoader\jre\lib.
This is just guess, but I think it is not really required.

Re: Remote Loader - error loading JVM

hi al_b
thank you very much for getting back. Probably the endorsed folder is
not the cause of our problem, but it was just something that struck us
while browsing the traces.

Is there nobody out there with the same issue? (hopefully solved now)

Btw, we have an up and running SAP Remote Loader on a Linux Server, for
this one we did not encounter any problems...

Re: Remote Loader - error loading JVM

Hi Haringka,
Could you create new instance of RemoteLoader (64 bit), set trace
level=5, start it and post full RL trace?

Re: Remote Loader - error loading JVM

Thanks for your help, problem is solved.

Apparently old files were installed in the Novell/RemoteLoader and the
Novell/RemoteLoader/jre/lib folder (all starting with ._) which tried to
be loaded which did not work.
We created new subdirectories 'bin' and moved all of these old files to
this directory.
Now the Remote Loader is up and running.

What is interesting though is that this problem never occured to anybody
else before cause we did not find any solution in any forum.. Or
everybody solved it himself 😉

Usually everybody have only "one copy" of jar (drivers shim) files.

Re: Remote Loader - error loading JVM

Hello Alex,
We also can not explain why these files are in the folder. On another
server we also installed the RL and it worked without problems. The only
difference between those servers is that we have Designer installed on
the one where it did not work immediately. Probably that was the missing
link, although we still do not know how and if this influenced the
installation.
Glad it is working now.
Best regards
Katharina

I've installed various versions of remote loader over the years and have
never seen this. So, yes, you found something unique. Maybe a virus
scanner or something like that got in the way of the installer?

Re: Remote Loader - error loading JVM

Hello David,

another colleague of mine also suggested the virus scanner, but I cannot
confirm it. The environment is the same as on another server where it
did work without problems. If we ever find out the reason for this weird
behaviour I'd definitely post it though!

Best regards, Katharina
