Regulatory and government mandates have hit data companies hard. If you think you’re exempt, you’re not. Any company that stores or transmits personal or sensitive data risks falling afoul of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Research published in January indicated that even though GDPR had been in effect for nearly a year at that point, almost three-quarters of firms in the United Kingdom didn’t comply with one of its most basic requirements: responding to user data requests.

While most companies won’t face the €50 million fine that France assessed on Google, few can afford repeated data violations. Even those that can weather fines generally have to face lost revenues and hurt reputations.

And we haven’t even considered any of the myriad laws and rules modeled on GDPR that other jurisdictions are implementing. Brazil’s data protection law (LGPD) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) are both scheduled to go into effect in 2020. Organizations need to prepare now, and they need to prepare to comply with multiple jurisdictions.

Companies that will thrive in this regulatory landscape will need to be able to manage data effectively and efficiently. They will need to be able to respond to audits and discovery requests in a timely manner. They will need to be able to comply with security requirements. And their archiving capabilities will be both complete and transparent.
