Installtion ofPerformance center11.0 witout ALM

Hi,

 

We are trying to install PC11.0 without ALM.

Is it possible to?

If yes, how do we configure the components(i.e PC server,LG.....)

No, ALM  is mandatory starting PC11.0 version.

The short answer to your question is No.  ALM is mandatory for PC 11 and 11.5

 

If that answers your question then you can disregard the rest of my post.  If however you would like to understand a little more about why, please continue reading.

 

Users

In PC 9.5 and below Performance center maintained its own separate user name and password tables.  This functionality could be extended to use LDAP and some SSO solutions but for the most part the MI_LRDB database contained the username and the encrypted passwords as well as which projects each user was permitted to use.  

 

In PC 11 and up this functionality has been turned over completely to the ALM platform.  

 

Projects

In PC 9.5 and below all of the projects as well and PC settings were stored in the single MI_LRDB.  This meant that you could not start out a project in one instance of PC and move it to another without moving all of the projects along with it

 

In PC 11 and up, each project is now in its own self contained database.  If you need to move a project from one instance of PC to another you can export, transfer the files in the repository and the database to the new instance and then restore the project.  None of the other projects are affected.  Another great benefit of moving to the ALM platform is that projects can now be on different databases and you can even mix and match SQL Server and Oracle (for example you could have a couple projects on database server 1 which is a SQL server database and all the other projects are on database server 2 which could be SQL Server or Oracle).  There is one limitation, the Site Administration database and the Lab Management database have to be stored on the same database server.

 

Lab Management

In PC 9.5 and below all of your hosts, pools, listeners, etc were managed in the Administration Site and stored in the same MI_LRDB as all the projects and users.  As with Projects this focus on a single database was limited in its scalability and was not as full featured as many would have hoped

 

In PC 11 and up all of the hosts, licenses, pools, listeners, and project settings have been moved into Lab Management and are separate from users, projects (creation and security), and general ALM settings.  Lab Management is a customized ALM project and because of that has many more possibilities for future enhancements.  For example ALM 11.5 can now utilize Lab Management for functional automated testing.

 

New functionality

In PC 9.5 and below PC was an island.  There was no way to incorporate requirements and\or defects and associate those assets to load tests or results.  If you wanted to do formal tracking of these you either did it manually or you created a Quality Center project to manage those aspects of your performance testing project


In PC 11 and up you can start out with the PC license only functionality which includes Requirements and Defects or you can upgrade to Application Life Cycle Management licenses (not to be confused with the ALM platform which is different) and you can include manual, functional automated, and performance tests in one project.  You can include release management, requirements, defects, and all of the QC functions into a single ALM platform.  The best thing is if you start with a PC only version, and later you need to upgrade to full PC and QC functionality you only need a new license as the software is the same.

 

There are a lot of other technologies in the background of the ALM platform that you really never see but that provide great enhancements to the Performance Center functionality.  Smart Repository, the J2EE application server, REST, as well as many others. When you look at the new Performance Center as a whole you can see that it could never stand alone with out the ALM platform without being completely re-written from the ground up.

 

I hope this gives you a little better understanding of the new direction of PC and also see how it is completely dependent on the ALM platform to provide many of its critical functions.
