Recording desktop applications

I'm working on set of products which are all desktop based. But they have some server components (processes) installed on same machine always running. Now I want to detect protocol for these kind of applications. I have tried to use Protocol Analyzer but it is getting stuck after recording few events and I need to kill LR instance. So I'm facing difficulties finding right way to test these kind of applications.

Best way is to understand the client/server traffic from your development team.

Understand the application environmment from your DEV team.
