I would say not exactly stability .. it gives a better view of the range of response time we get ..

consider majority of the values are less than 10s .. but there are some transactions whose response time greater than 200s .. this can give us a avg value of around 50-60 secs ...

But incase if we consider only 90% value, the value with highest number will be ignored, giving us a better value.. consider around 35-40 sec ..

this value no where gives information regarding the stability of the server but just the benchmark of the avg response time ..

We measure this value to check how the majority of the transactions have performed .. 90% value refers to the value of the best 90% of transactions..

we shall ignore the worst 10% .. this will give us an idea of how the test has performed..

Some times, only because of few spikes entire response time may be increased.. but if we consider 90% respose time value, it is under acceptable limit... in that case 90% value helps us..

To calculate it:

Take the set of values, arrange in any order either ascending or descending .. (acsending is preferred) ..

Consider there are 100 values sorted in ascending order.. the value at the 90th position is 90% value..

Take an another example of 500 values .. 90% of 500 is 450 .. so the value at  450 is 90% value ..

Hope this helps

Thq Ratha ..we ensure that the application stability or anything ...? For this is purpose only we measure the value ...? or any other purpose we are measuring

Re: why should we want to measure 90% value

It is not to measure the 90% value. It is the 90th % value which we are going to consider and ignore the top 10 high time consuming transactions due to occassional spikes during test execution process. The calcuation can be done by collecting all the list of transaction response times from the Raw Results and arrange them in Ascending order and consider the 90th value out of the total response times. So that we are ignoring the top 10% values which are not consistent and are due to the occassional spikes. Few customers might request you for 95% value and this way you can calculate the 95% value. Let me know if you have any qeustions. Thanks.

Percentile!

I just felt that this topic deserved at least one post with that word in.
