USB Hubs and Device Connectivity

Jump to solution

Hi,

I would like to pass on the benefit of experience.  One of our clients, a major payments company has a private device farm in India that uses Mobile Center.  The installation has been using Plugable hubs for the past two years.  Following extensive investigation into the issue and assistance from the Micro Focus R&D team, I would suggest following the advice on the Mobile Center support site and obtaining a Cambrionix Hub for signficant deployments.  Discussions with Cambrionix convinced me that this is the correct approach.

Mobile Center does not include infrastructure items, IntelliQA is a Platinum Partner of Micro Focus and has purchased this for our client.  The quality of cables is also very important.

Regards

Paul

As an update, the hub has solved the issue for our client.  They are very pleased.  I am from IntelliQA a Micro Focus Platinum Partner, rather than Micro Focus themselves.  Based on technical undertsanding of the difference with the hub, it working well with our Mobile Center and the difference seen at our client, we will include a Cambrionix Hub as a mandatory aspect in future sales.  Feel free to contact me if you would like more information.

Hello,

can you tell us what was the issue with the pluggable?

We currently use ~30  of them with few issues. (private farm of 150+ devices)

As far as I know the cambrionix did not exist in usb 3.

What models would you recommend?

Thanks

Hi,

Devices were becoming disconnected intermittently, the test automators and the manual testers were having to reconnect them, which although not that much of a hardship was inconvenient.  Investigation revealed that there was power fluctuation which was fine some devices, but not all.  The devices are all in India.

This is the hub selected:

https://cambrionix.com/products/powerpad15s-industrial-strength-managed-hub/

It is the same as referenced on the support sitem,m and the same as the Mobile Center R&D team use (I'm told).  The power management will be better on these hubs, they are used for a variaty of applications, including Mobile testing.

The Plugable hubs have been used internally by IntelliQA, we have run extensive tests with these and they have been OK.  A more industrialised unit makes sense for broader enterprise use in my view.

Hello,

thanks for your answer, we have the same kind of behavior :

for example samsung galaxy a5 are always fine but galaxy s6 disconnect very often. (same for some other devices)

We can often get them back thanks to adb commands (reboot the device) but not alwaysProblem is, they are locked in a server room so we cannot access them as we want...

We tested the cambrionix hub here but did not select it because it was usb2 and not 3, do you know if it can be an issue? Because as devices evolve, the screen resolution goes up and I'm afraid the usb 2 will not be enought anymore

Thanks

Re: USB Hubs and Device Connectivity

Hi,

I have been doing some more research into this, and talking with Cambionix.

For USB 3.0, the device, hub, computer and cable would all need to support USB 3.0 to realise any speed difference.  No Apple phones currently support USB 3.0, they are USB 2.0.  The newer iPad supports USB 3.0 but only from device to host.

https://cambrionix.com/faq/i-use-usb3-0-hub-will-i-get-faster-data-transfer/

There is now a Cambionix USB 3.0 Hub:

https://cambrionix.com/products/powerpad15ss-managed-usb3-0-hub/

It would need justification as so few devices support USB 3.0.  Where supported it would increase data transfer speeds.  The only driver available is for Windows (10 presumably).  We prefer Linux connectors for which there is not yet a driver.

It sounds like we could benefit fro each others experience here.  Where are you based?

Re: USB Hubs and Device Connectivity

Hello

We are based in France

Maybe the need for usb 3 was a misconception for us.

Anyway we use windows servers so the cambrionix usb 3 hubs will be ok for us.

We are now trying to avoid the swelling of our smartphones batteries, we need to be able to stop power to some devices periodically, as the cambronix can be managed on each usb port separately, we will order some of them.

I saw one of your competitors added support for managing and monitoring those cambrionix hubs directly into it's software, i think this is a great improvement for "big" farms like ours. In terms of management (reconnect disconnected devices by simulating a usb unplug) and power management (limit battery swelling by cycling them and limit power consumption on low activity periods.

Just over the channel :)  I am in the UK.

The API is an interesting aspect for power management etc.  I was thinking that we might investigate this, we have made good use of APIs in the past, e.g. for card simulators and robots for card payment solutions to create end to end MPoS tests.  This must be similar.  Chris Haynes is the person to talk to at Cambrionix, chris.haynes@cambrionix.com.

Hello

We have decided to go this route too.

Power management will also be used of cambrionix hubs by managing the usb port via the API and specific developments to make some of the actions automatic (device reconnections, battery cycling...)

Cool.  I spoke with R&D, we are raising an Enhancement Request to include Power Management for the hubs into the UI.

Keep in touch on this - you can also contact me on paul.kaye@intelliqa.com.
