Administratively Down Interface Still Being Monitored

Jump to solution

I have replicated this incident on 10.30 (Linux) and 9.22 (Solaris).

We have an administratively down sub-interface, with an IP attached to it on a router.  The physical interface is also administratively down.  The NNMi discovers the IP and wants to monitor the interface.  The status poll reports the interface is administratively up and operationally down so it alerts.  Logging into the router shows that is false and that the status is admin down - down.

The nms-disco.properties file on 9.22 says, "By default, NNMi does not suppress the monitoring of interfaces that are administratively down."  whereas the same file on 10.30 says, "By default, NNMi suppresses the monitoring of interfaces that are administratively down, thereby preventing node status changes."

I have not changed either file on either server.

What do I need to do to automatically stop monitoring interfaces that get administratively disabled?

SYZ,

There is a tool called "nnmPollInterfaces.ovpl" in the "support" directory that can help you out here.   If you run the command with the "-help" option it will provide all the details.  What you can do is to add a capability to the "UP" interfaces to monitor them and not add it to the "DOWN" interfaces.  Then you can form an interface group based on the capability and add this to the monitoring configuration in order to enable polling on the UP interfaces and not the DOWN interfaces..

There are a few steps to go through to set this up, but once done the Admin Down interfaces can be configured not to be polled.

Please note I have tested this on 10.21 with no problem,  However 10.30 seems to have a problem and I shall log a defect against it.  There seems to be an authentication problem with the script.

  Hope this helps

Hello SYZonker

Thanks for posting

Would be great if you can check the monitoring rule which is being applied to that interface, if you do not want to have status on those interfaces you can exclude them from monitoring. I recommend you to check our documentation to better know about this.

Re: Administratively Down Interface Still Being Monitored

Hi Vincent,

Thanks for your reply.

My preference is for the NNMi to automatically not monitor an interface that has been placed administratively down.  The only solution I've found is to drill into the node, go to the alerting interface in that node and then unmanage that interface.

This is a poor solution though because when the network admin re-enables the interface he will not re-enable the monitoring.  I looked for a way to try and make an interface group for all interfaces that are administratively down but I did not see a way to filter on that condition.  If we could do that we could then exclude that interface group from monitoring.

So if there a way to make such an interface group or alternatively another way you automatically start/stop interface monitoring based on the administrative status?

Thanks kindly,

SYZ

Hi,

Just wondering if there is a fix for the problem in 10.30 yet?

Thanks,
