Automated backup of "My Documents"

I'm searching for a way to automatically backup the contents of user's
data (all data in the "My Documents" folder). We have setup a batch file
with an icon on the desktop that copies everything to their user
directory on the NW server. The problem is 1) Users almost never
remember to click the backup icon. 2)the batch program takes forever to
copy the programs b/c the virus protection checks every file that gets
copied.

We would like a simple way to copy the contents automatically w/o user
intervention. Also, this is a one-way backup, it always goes from the
user's My Documents to the user's backup folder on the server. We
purchased the ZENworks 6.5 suite and I review the iFolder function, but
we really don't want anything that complicated. Please advise on a way
to "synchronize" the folder, so for instance, when a user logs in, it
checks and backs up files if necessary w/o them having to do anything.

Try using Windows scheduler and have it run a batch file which copies the
directory up to the user directory.

Re: Automated backup of "My Documents"

Why not redirect the "Documents" folder to the users' home directory on the
server?

yeah, is the best tool for it I think! I have a few customers who use it
for redirecting / backing up "My Documents".
This has so many advantages: i.e.
-on Mobile User Notebooks- they lost it or it will be stolen, all files
are available...
- Desktop PCs - User move to another HW or something like this...
- Home User with PC in Office : User has saved a File in "My Documents" at
office, is coming home and want to change something... with iFolder just
downloading automatically and the User can work at home....

more examples?
It is the best solution for "My Documents" - backup or redirection I think

Re: Automated backup of "My Documents"

That's what we do here, just hack the registry. Not an option for laptops
of course, that's where we use iFolder

Re: Automated backup of "My Documents"

If you use Zenworks Group Policies, there is a folder redirection template
out there that will automatically redirect any user folder (favorites, docs,
etc.) to where you specify..

Check this url out, very useful..

Dave Parkes,

Yes, but it was tricky getting those cuneiform entries into the registry.

An extensible policy pr even app obect works as well.
