Backup / Restore NDS.

Hi..

I have a question...

What is the proper way to run a Backup Exec 9.x Novell Backup so I can
restore my Netware 6.5 Server from Scratch?

How should I reinstall the OS and/or run the associated Restore so I get my
Netware 6.5 Server restored, with users, rights, login scripts, iPrint
services etc as they were before a failure?

Thanks..!

I'll give the snappy answer while you're waiting for the BE-specific
details. The snappy answer is to back up NDS by having a 2nd server
holding replicas. Restoring from tape is considered last-resort, and only
if there are no other surviving [replica] servers in the tree.

The guys who know NDS can tell you the real answer, but that seems to be
the gist of what gets reported here. If you don't get a better answer,
check out novell.support.netware.6x.server-backup and/or
novell.support.ds.nds.netware.

Re: Backup / Restore NDS.

Thanks Dave..!

Good idea when you have another server around on the tree... but, what if
(like me) you only have one Server?

Thanks..!

Put vmware on an not-too-old laptop, and run your second server on that?

Restoring DS's in a single server environment isn't too much of a
drama. If it is a multiple server environment lots of other things come
around to keep worried about.

Not sure if BE has a DR option available.

well - IIRC, with a single server environment there are 2 possibilities:

a) the server is still running, just mucked up - in that case, restore
from tape. I think the order is to restore NDS, then SSI, then files

b) the server is totally whacked - much more difficult. You will need to
reinstall netware (using same tree name, server name, ip address, etc)
then reinstall backup exec, then if you have GW you need to extend schema,
then restore NDS and SSI, reboot, then restore files and trustees

Re: Backup / Restore NDS.

The correct and easy way to do this (and I have done this multiple
times), is use the utility the Novell has provided since about 9 months
ago - dsbk.nlm. Do a search on Novell's support site for it. DSBK.NLM
will COMPLETELY backup NDS on your server and allow you to restore it
to a new server - no ties to anything. You can install a new server
from scratch into a fake tree. When you are done installing and
patching the box, copy your backup created by dsbk.nlm and then restore
eDirectory. You will --NOT-- have to do anything other than export
your SSL Root certificate to SYS:PUBLIC\ROOTCERT.DER, verify that
SYS:ETC\HOSTS and SYS:ETC\HOSTNAME contains the correct IP address and
servername, and then run tckeygen (if you are on NW6.5). You are done!
100% from scratch restore. DSBK.NLM will NOT check with other
servers to do it's restore - it simply writes back all of the files for
eDirectory.
All partititioning and replicas are preserved.
