Backup software

Im am not sure if this is the right forum, but let me try.

I looked around the internet for some suggestions or infos about third party software for backup files directories from oes2 linux,
but I could not found a really good answer.
Is there somebody who has installed a backup software on a oes 2 server (linux) and a tape drive?

thanks

There are a few thread throughout the forums (try using
http://forums.novell.com to search) talking about this already, but I
have been very successful with Commvault Galaxy. I use 6.1 now, which
supports oes1/2, netware, windows, a ton of *nix's and even oes cluster
support (oes 1 in version 6.1, oes2 clustering in version 7).

Has all the cluster support and OS features of syncsort's backupexpress
at a fraction of the price.

It does require a windows server to be your central backup management
server though. I have my tape changer attached to it and do
over-the-wire backups to disk then to tape.

Re: Backup software

Adam,

Have you been able to backup OES2 NSS volumes with Commvault Galaxy? We
can not get Commvault to back NSS volumes. My OES2 project is behind
because I can not Commvault to work.

thanks

Re: Backup software

Phil,

I can backup my OES2 NSS volumes with 6.1 (32 bit server 😉 ) fine,
without the OES iDA even. I just use the linux FS iDA and all point it
at /media/nss/<VOLUME>. I'm not sure how it handles ACL and trustees
this way. It's only a crutch until 7.0.2 comes around...

The requirements for 7.0 don't list any 64 or 32 bit issues, but a
commvault guy did tell me that OES2 clustering definately wasn't
supported on 64 bit. I'm not sure it was the 64 bit alone, or the
clustering on it... and "SuSE Linux 10 Enterprise Server 64-bit Edition
with kernel 2.6.16.46-0.12 and glibc-2.4-31.30 (Patch Level 1)" is
listed as compatible os for unix iDA. Might want to give it a shot.
Maybe the OES iDA isn't supported, but if you can backup the mount point
like I'm doing, what the hell, go for it.

My problem is the clustering in OES2... I need 7.0 for that. I've been
waiting for dell to send it since november. 😞

OK, I'm sure the OES guys don't care about commvault, so if you've got
more you want to discuss, drop me an email.

Re: Backup software

Syncsort Backup Express fully supports OES2 NSS and Groupwise, and has proper cluster migration support... Not cheap for small shops as it is targeted as being an Enterprise Backup... Controller will run on Windows or Linux....

Both Arcserve and Backup Exec have limited support....

Re: Backup software

As of this date, Backup Express does not support OES2 in a cluster. Not even version 3 with the latest patches. Check out the Backup Express Compatiability Guide - it states a lack of cluster support. I think it is because they don't have a SLES10 BexBeat yet (my guess).

I want to backup 1 server OES2 with nss.

Must I install the linux novell client to?
I know ther is a problem with java-version how did you fixed it?

Dit you use sesam_srv-3.4.1-26.sles10.i586.rpm?

How did you config the tape drive?

Re: Antw: Backup software

Syncsorts Backup Express is a good tool. Its easy to use and works with OES2. Pricey though, but worth it.

Re: Backup software

I was told by Veritas (sorry Symantec) on 19th June that "Backup Exec for Windows 12 is due to have support for OES 2 shortly". They also said they have no plans for any Backup Exec for Netware versions so support OES 2.

Still no sign of the support a month later. Shortly could mean anything.

From what I've heard, Symantec's definition of "shortly" might be a tad
longer than the normal person's definition of "shortly" if you catch my
drift, at least when it comes to them officially supporting OES2 with
BEWIN 12.
