Cant find vmlinuz-xenpae on SLES10SP3 media

In the upgrade (OES2SP1 -> OES2SP2) documentation is says: Copy your
domU's `uname -r` kernel and initrd to the upgrade directory - /upgrade.

BUT, I cant find vmlinuz-xenpae, either on SLES10SP3.i586 or SLES10SP3.x86_64
I just found vmlinuz-xen at /boot on the media...

Someone?

Regards,
Anders

Heres the doc anyway:

Checking my install sources for both SP2 and SP3 I also don't see xenpae
for 32-bit (you won't see it for 64-bit as per the documentation page
you linked).

# find | egrep '(vmlinuz|initrd)-xen'
../SLES10-SP2-i386/boot/i386/initrd-xenpae
../SLES10-SP2-i386/boot/i386/initrd-xen
../SLES10-SP2-i386/boot/i386/vmlinuz-xenpae
../SLES10-SP2-i386/boot/i386/vmlinuz-xen
../SLES10-SP2-x86_64/boot/x86_64/initrd-xen
../SLES10-SP2-x86_64/boot/x86_64/vmlinuz-xen
../SLES10-SP3-i386/boot/i386/initrd-xen
../SLES10-SP3-i386/boot/i386/vmlinuz-xen
../SLES10-SP3-x86_64/boot/x86_64/initrd-xen
../SLES10-SP3-x86_64/boot/x86_64/vmlinuz-xen

Let me ask Novell.

Re: Cant find vmlinuz-xenpae on SLES10SP3 media

Anders,

I think that is a error in the documentation. You should be fine using the xen packages during the upgrade. During that time you would not see all the memory if you have assigned more then 4GB to the domU, but after the installation has finished, the domU would but using the xenpae modules and then everything is back.

There shouldn't be a problem doing the upgrade using the xen modules because the update itself recognizes the packages that are currently installed (therefor will see the xenpae) and will update that to the SP3 level. So when the domU after the upgrade boots it will find those files again and would boot with them.

Followed the DOC exactly and I ended up like this..... doh.

labb-srv3:~ # xm create -F voes05.migrate
Error: (2, 'Invalid kernel', 'xc_dom_compat_check: guest type
xen-3.0-x86_32 not supported by xen kernel, sorry\n')
labb-srv3:~ #

What to do?! Upgraded a VMware-based OES2 SP1 and that was SIMPLE! 🙂

Anders,

I just started to install such a domU to try it myself.
I'll report my findings back.

Re: Cant find vmlinuz-xenpae on SLES10SP3 media

Anders,

you are absolutely right. I fail with the same error.
The problem is that on a 64bit dom0 the domU needs the xenpae kernel.
If you would have a 32bit dom0 it might work with the xen kernel.

I try now to install a fresh SP3 system and pull out the kernel and ramdisk from that and try a upgrade with them.

Re: Cant find vmlinuz-xenpae on SLES10SP3 media

Anders,

whild installing that SP3 system I thought about checking the SP2 media and there I found the xenpae files. I used them for booting and updating the SP2 domU and that worked quiet well. The only thing is that it was "just" a SLES system without OES addons, therefor I cannot say if that would gave a impact. I forwarded that question to Novell beside the one Simon already posted regarding the xenpae files. We await a answer on it.

I have been pointed at TID 7002177 except it notes that from 1 June 2009
the method is no longer supported. So trying to get a better answer!

Good luck.
