Copy Folders\Files and Trustees from Linux to NetWare - NSS

Hi all

I require to retire a Linux Cluster (OES 2.0.2) so need to move the Files and Structure to a NetWare 6.5sp8 Server. Unfortunately, the SCMT tells me that it is not capable. If I just copy then I lose the trustees so does anyone know of a new or existing tool to complete this task for me. Thanks.

Hi,

My question is why would you want to copy your data to NetWare which is not a supported platform? Why not a newer OES server?

I've not tried this, so I don't know for sure whether it will work,
you will need to test it. But you might be able to save the trustee
info with metamig
https://www.novell.com/documentation/oes11/stor_nss_lx/data/metamig.html
and then use trustee.nlm on the netware server to restore that
information.

Re: Copy Folders\Files and Trustees from Linux to NetWare -

Thanks Guys for your time and replies. Unfortunately Fife Council is in the process of transitioning to Windows 😞 and there is a change freeze. The Hardware on which the Linux Cluster is installed keeps failing so we're attempting to move the data onto one of the old NetWare 6.5sp8 Servers as a temporary measure.

Hi,

I am sorry that you are in such a difficult position.

There is a very *slow* way of doing this, I think it will work, on a workstation with the Novell Client installed have drives mapped both to source and destination volumes. Then, I suggest that you do this in small chunks, right-click on a folder for example and choose Novell Copy from the menu that appears. As far as I am aware this copies trustee information across.

Perhaps this is worth a try/test?

Let us know how it goes.

Re: Copy Folders\Files and Trustees from Linux to NetWare -

Hi,

After further digging you could possibly try this....

Mount the NetWare volume on the Linux (OES2) server using ncpmount.

Then using migfiles on the Linux server do the file transfer:

This command migrates data from the NCP Linux volume NCPVOL at /usr/novell/ncpvol on the source server with the IP address 192.168.1.3 to the newdir directory on the NSS volume NSS1:

migfiles -s 192.168.1.3 -X /usr/novell/ncpvol -x /media/nss/NSS1/newdir

Perhaps this is worth a try too and cleaner than my suggestion above using the Novell Client.

Please let us know how it goes.

If you want to use SCMT, there is one trick you can try.

(checking my notes.. found..), you can make SCMT "skip" the version
check, so it will work even with new SMS RPMs
- open up \\oes2server\sys\scu\ folder
- start consolidation utility
- when it starts doing the pre-checks, keep looking the \sys\scu folder,
and when smsinstalledversion.txt is created - delete it.

It will then give non-critical error that it cannot check the SMS RPM
version, BUT it will let you continue normally 😃

Thanks again Guys. I've been off a few days so will get cracking this week. I'll let you know how it goes and how we (hopefully) solved it.
