Error resolving localhost

Hello,

We've got a NetWare 6.5 SP5 server that's gone slightly bonkers. When I
try to ping localhost the silly beast tries to reach 222.253.8.28, which
is obviously wrong. The hosts looks fine and has all the correct
entries, and there's nothing wrong with the nameservers. I copied the
hosts and resolv.cfg from another server without this problem and
nothing changed.

If I ping loopback first, and only ping localhost after that, everything
is fine.

Unfortunately this is more than a weird and cosmetic error, because HP
Dataprotector needs to correctly resolve and reach localhost to function
correctly. Can anyone help me out here?

Regards,
Jeroen van der Linden.

Re: Error resolving localhost

Jeroen,

You probably have a typo in your HOSTS file. Recheck your HOSTS file to
see if it is really correct.
222.253.8.28 seems to be an IP address is Vietnam which through reverse
DNS really resolves to localhost. I wonder if this is done by mistake
or whether there is some malicious scheme behind this to catch traffic
from badly configured computers.

Marcel,

Sorry for getting back so late. An eyeball inspection of hosts revealed
nothing. Copying & modifying from another server solved the problem. Now
it works as designed/desired. What happened was that the request got
routed to our upstream (provider) nameserver, that gave the ridiculous
response. Since we probably have different providers (ours is the Dutch
kpn) this obviously must be because there is some global Vietnamese
conspiracy 😉

Thanks,
Jeroen van der Linden.
