Extended memory?

Hi,

I have some Netware (6.5SP8) servers with 8G of RAM - default amount that they came with.
On the console it says
Server memory = 3,405,773Kb
Extended server memory = 4,980 Mb

One of my servers regularly runs out of memory and this is caused by Netshield running on it.
So, I have a few questions
1. Is "extended" memory the same as "protected " memory?
2. Can I use the memory above the base 4Gb and if so,
3. How would I load Netshield to run in it?

Thanks - Mark

Extended memory is because 32 bit programs cannot access beyond 4 GB,
except through a tedious bank swapping method

1. No, no connection whatsoever.
2. you can't. Netware does automatically for caching and some other stuff.
3. You can't and do't.

Running out of memory on a fullly loaded NW server is highly unusual. In
this case,Netshield (which is fairly notorious for this) is leaking
memory from its allocators.

You need a patched version of Netshield, or a different NLM.

Re: Extended memory?

As Mike says, this is a known bug in Netshield and the only proper fix is to get a fixed version. Even if you could get Netshield access to the extra memory it would just use that up too.

Re: Extended memory?

Thanks Michael, Pretty much as I suspected.
Unfortunately Netshield is no longer supported on Netware as far as patches etc.
Ok then - next question, can I, or is it even advisable to load Netshield into a protected address space?

(I tried - but it failed to load)

No because you cannot load an NLM using file hooks (which are critical
for AV apps) into protected memory, as you've discovered.

Your options really are:

a) run a CRON job to restart the server every day @ midnight to limit
leaking
b) find a supported AV solution (not many left, if any)
c) migrate to OES Linux

Sophos still supports Netware:

Are you sure you have their last version installed? I was pretty sure this had been fixed ...

I ran NetShield for years. The last memory issue I recall was that when
they processed DAT files it wanted to allocate a single big chunk of memory
to do the file copy, and that would fail. I believe I got them to fix that
issue, however they stopped releasing DAT file updates a long time ago, so
NetShield is worthless now. We switches to Symantec AV, and it is even
worse, it fragments memory like mad.
