File System rights - read only

We have the role of "local PC admins" who should be able to read the rights in a volumes file system without being able to change the rights. They should have all file system rights - exept "Access Control" and "Supervisor"

what we tried is to give them r/f on the ACL of the Volume/Server, without success.

Is there anybody with a good idea? Is it possible?

Re: File System rights - read only

Well, first of all, I'm not 100% sure I understand what you want to do. Is your "local pc admin" supposed to have read rights to the volumes on the server?
If that is really the case, then you need to assign the required rights at the root of each volume on the server where they need the rights. NDS rights have no influence on file system rights with the exception of write access to the server's ACL which gives you supervisor rights to all volumes on that server.

Re: File System rights - read only

the local PC admins shoul have on the all rights exept "access control" and "supervisor".
They should be be able to look by themself which rights are set on a folder to give a qualified intruction to the admin for changes.

Re: File System rights - read only

Well, if you are talking about file system rights on the server, I gave
you the answer. Make them trustees of the root directories of the volumes
with read and file scan rights.

Re: File System rights - read only

Hi Marcel,

thanks for your help.
But if I give a user read and File Scan rights on the volume root, he is just able to read the rights of his own user. But he shouls be able to read all trustees set on a directory/file.

Re: File System rights - read only

Ok, sorry, I missed the part about reading the rights.
Alas, at file system level, the right to read rights is couple to the
right to assign rights. There is no "read only" access to rights.
The only workaround I can image is that you regularly run trustee.nlm on
your server and tell it to save the result to a directory that is readable
by the pc admin. The pc admin can then read that file to see what rights
people have to various directories. You could use cron or nrm to schedule
regular automatic runs of trustee.nlm

Re: File System rights - read only

I already gave them a trustee Report. But this not easy to read if you are not used to. The reasons why we do not want to give them the Access Control right, ist that the skilla are not very high - if you know what I mean 😉

Can you use perl or maybe even excel macros to massage the report into an easier read? Maybe some of the report massaging utilities in Cool Solutions might give an example.
