Forward queries for specific domain to non novell dns server

Hi,

We have two OES2015SP1 server which are used for Novell DNS with DNS/DHCP console (novell-named).

They host primary zones for ourcompany.com and our clients connect to it.

An external party has setup a dns server for sub.our.company.com and want to be resolvable for our clients.

Via dhcp our client connect to our two OES2015SP1 for resolving.

We want to achieve somehow to forward queries for the sub.our.company.com to their non novell dns server.

I tried to create a forward zone and set one of my servers as designated server and set in the zone a forwarder to the ip of the non novell dns server.

Somehow it does not work if we try to do an nslookup to the novell server and ask a query server.sub.our.company.com.

Is this the right way to do it ?
What step did I miss to make it work?
Do I need to set a forwarder on the dns server object itself in dns / dhcp console?

Kr,

Joeri

Hi Joeri,

You say:
> They host primary zones for ourcompany.com and our clients connect to
> it.

Then you say:
> An external party has setup a dns server for sub.our.company.com and
> want to be resolvable for our clients.

and:
> Somehow it does not work if we try to do an nslookup to the novell

I'm not following your example. Is your DNS server setup using
ourcompany.com as the primary domain or is it company.com with "our" as
a sub-domain?

Are you able to resolve server.sub.... if you point nslookup to the DNS
server that hosts it?

Have you read the OES 2015 SP1: DNS/DHCP Services for Linux
Administration Guide?

Basically this one still holds true if it's about a child domain of a parent you're hosting yourself AND the child domain's DNS server resides in this child domain.

First thing I would check is that you can directly query that external
DNS server from your DNS server(s)

Then the links Thomas gave are how to tell your DNS where the DNS
server is for the subdomain.

Hi Mathias,

We created an SR.

They gave me exacte the same solution.

We did it with a glue record and it works fine.

Thanks for replying everyone!

Yes I do trust you guys , but the guy from the SR replied sooner and I got lost out of sight of the forum post.

And as good forum member always wanted to post back the solution for others 🙂
