High Utilization/ Memory issues


Have a Netware 6.5 sp5 server that is running high cpu utilization
90-100% and memory stats are as follows:
NLM Memory 767,348,736 770,883,584
File System Cache 300,482,560 861,458,432
Extended File System Memory 0 0
Virtual Memory System 169,799,680 169,799,680
Extended Virtual Memory System 0 0
Available Memory 99,921,920 97,226,752*
DOS, Video, Misc. Memory 4,164,608 4,164,608
Total System Memory 1,341,717,504 N/A

I have applied 6.5sp6upd1 and checked some other things but I can't
figure out what I need to do to correct this. Can anyone suggest
anything or give me some advice on how to clear this up? I'm fairly
new at this so any help is appreciated.

If you will forgive an administrator and not a sysop's take on this one
....

I would start by looking at autoexec.ncf (type "ea" at the console
prompt and hit Enter to edit it). See what you're loading, and maybe
start by commenting out a few things and rebooting. E.g., comment out
backup software, antivirus software, and the like, and see what that
does for your busy server. You can then manually load the things you
commented out, or start uncommenting and rebooting one program at a time
but takes a lot longer. You could also try starting your server with
"server -na" to skip loading autoexec.ncf, then MOUNT ALL and LOAD
MONITOR and see what your utilization looks like. You won't have
network drivers and other niceties, though.

Last but certainly not least, restart the server and start from a clean
slate - do you still see the high useage once the server has been
restarted?

That's my old-fashioned approach to tracking something like this down.
Generally I've found it to be backup software looking for a new tape, AV
software performing a scan, and the like.

Next time it happens, look in

Monitor - kernel - threads, and
NRM - profile/debug - Profile CPU execution by NLM

to see what is causing the high util.

I suspect you may simply be a little short of memory. Can you load
seg.nlm, wait til the problem occurs, and get a copy of the segstats.txt
for the server (load seg, then from the seg main screen '/' -> Info ->
Write Segstats) then post that here.

Also, Can you do a "load config /jumba1se" from the server, then post
the resulting sys:system\config.txt, after removing the file listing
that occurs after the set commands, and any sensitive infomation- eg
serial number, public IP addresses, snmp community strings, remote
access passwords etc.

I was wrong; you're not a little short of memory, you are severely
short. 1.2gb is not enough to run 1,000 users pls Zen, BE, Netstorage,
etc, especially on hardware that's 8 years old and thus on the slow side.

I'd recommend going to over 3gb Ram on this machine, or new hardware
with at least 2gb ram.

Thanks for looking...I'm not sure exactly how much RAM this guy will
hold but I'm going to find out and hopefully get some ordered. I

be sure to order the same type of memory you have installed now - NetWare
doesn't run well on "mix and match" memory

Yep, it MUST be identical make, model and speed. Preferably same size
too but that's not a must. Frankly I'd think it's new server time.
