Import users to NDS (from CSV)?

Hi,

Can you easily create NDS/Edir users from a CSV file without purchasing a
3rd party program?
I found a free tool called "UsrImp32.exe" but I suspect it relies on a
really old client, as it gives an error on 4.91 SP4 (Can't set
DCK_LAST_CONNECTION).

Anybody help? I have a CSV with loginID, surname, given name, password -
that's all I need to import.

TIA
Alan

Thanks Marcel, but Im not familiar with this tool, is there any
documentation specifically for importing users only?

Thanks

Well, users are not really different than other types of object. What you specifically need from the tool is the DELIM Source Handler to read your CSV file. Read the section DELIM Source Handler Options from the documentation I pointed you to.

Re: Import users to NDS (from CSV)?

Alan;

Although you are not looking for a 3rd party tool, IMHO you should invest in the JRB Utilities from JRB Software.

One of the utilities is jrbimport, which will do exactly what you want. You can take a .csv file, and along with a
control file that you create, you can bulk create users and set just about any configuration or attribute that you want.
The software is cheap, and is THE BEST set of utilities for managing Netware.

Good Luck.

erm.....maybe it's just me but I have the same question and no where on this post it has been answered? It's all well and good pointing out alternatives, but just by some miracle can someone give an answer to the original question?

And the original question was? Yes, you can import users through UIMPORT
or ICE

Re: Import users to NDS (from CSV)?

the thread you're replying to is old and the original is not in my
local message db (so it's at least a half-year old, i'd guess).

but going by the thread name, importing via CSV is easy with both
UIMPORT and ICE. And I know that there are bunches of examples of both
in other threads around here. edirectory.* groups would be where I
would look. the online docs would be a good place for ICE as well.
Uimport is dead.

JRB Utilities also have a user import tool that can use CSV if i'm not
mistaken...

ldapGadget can covert between standard LDIF and CSV with two simple
commands.

Re: Import users to NDS (from CSV)?

MatFeasey, I started this thread, Import/export wizard from ConsoleOne was
what I ended up using. It's a bit of a pain, as you have to have a template
to import from in the first place, it is not a simple as feeding it a simple
CSV file...

There was a really good link somewhere that gave the suggestion of using a
CSV file to feed an MSWord mail merge, to create your formatted import file.
Bit messy, but works a treat.

Re: Import users to NDS (from CSV)?

So I am not the only one to get that DCK error! Whew! I have used the ICE system but to generate the proper file syntax takes quite a while and was very cumbersome. When it worked, UsrImp32 was fantastic. Any way we can get that tool to have source released and get it to work properly with later clients?

Unfortunately I maintain a school district where we need three quotes to buy a mouse, they are so tight. Free to us is about the ONLY purchase they will approve! 😉

Re: Import users to NDS (from CSV)?

I did the export of users to CSV in my project:

Cool Solutions: UserKVYlist v1.1.3

If your company sponsers the project, then make the import.

Well, what was wrong with my answer? The ICE tool I mentioned is a Novell
tool included with eDirectory.

Re: Import users to NDS (from CSV)?

Here is what I do:

Create two mailmerge templates:
* One to create accounts
* One to set passwords (after accounts are created)

I use a [homegrown] mailmerge vbscript to create the LDIF
* My script reads an input txt file that is delimited
- In Excel, Save As "Text (Tab Delimited)"
- Open the txt file in a text editor and replace the "quotes" with nothing (my script doesn't play well with quotes)
- Then Save the file

Then I run the LDIF against eDirectory via ICE

See my attachment

The template assumes that the input CSV/txt is in the following format (you can change the template)

Full_LDAP_DN Givenname Surname fullname
