MS Office documents opening in read only mode for one user.

MS Office documents opening in read only mode for one user.

This is a fully patched NetWare 6.5 SP8 server. The files reside on an
NSS volume.

About two weeks ago I created a new user (user1). When this user tries
to open a .docx or .xlsx document, it opens in read only mode. This
user's trustee rights allow full access to these documents. User1 can
open and edit a simple .txt file.

When another user with the same rights opens the same .docx or .xlsx
documents on the same computer, they open correctly.

When user1 tries to open these files from a different computer, again
they open in read only mode. This issue appears to be related to the
user1 id and not the file or the computer on which the file is opened.

I have been unsuccessful in my attempts to determine the cause.

Any suggestions?

Re: MS Office documents opening in read only mode for one us

Does he have full access to the documents FOLDER or just to the documents?
Which effective rights does have have on the folder and docs?
Which client version?

Both

The same on both: RWECMF

> Which client version?

Client for Open Enterprise Server 2 SP4 (IR7a)

Remember: both users have the same rights only User1 can't edit!

Re: MS Office documents opening in read only mode for one us

It's been unclear from the previous post whether file and folder rights are sufficient and identical for the users.
Any difference between opening documents from within office itself as opposed to explorer? Thinking of the old preview pane issue.

In the OP I mentioned that both users have the same rights.
In the previous post I stated those rights are: RWECMF.
They should be sufficient! 😉

Both users were opening the document the same way: by double-clicking
on the filename from Windows Explorer. Opening the document from within
the Office application yields the same results: For User1, it opens as
Read Only.

You weren't talking 'bout folder rights in the OP. If you login WS-only as user2 and afterwards to eDir as user1, does this make a difference?
Also, while you're duping this, can you see a lock on the file?
Any AV stuff involved?
