MSA1000 and high Current Disk Requests

We have had a problem that happens during high user activity periods.

Usually in the morning when several hundred users are accessing their mail
files, etc.
The server will slow down to a crawl (appears stopped to the end user).
(BTW, server is HP ML530 dual XEON 2.4GHz 4GB-RAM, QL2300.HAM(2GB fibre),
dual trunked CE1000 nics - plenty of horses )

Looking at the NW6.5sp3+ console - Monitor shows Current Disk Requests
cycling between 100 and 300 but rarely going below 100.

A few weeks ago a NSS /poolrebuild /purge was run and were fine for about 3
weeks.
Now, our volume only has about 8% purgable files. (I don't think this is
excessive)

Anyone else experiencing these 'slow-down' problems with MSA1000?

Also our pools are NW mirrored to an offsite MSA1000.
The server is part of a cluster, this problem has appeared on other cluster
servers as well.

It appears as if the MSA1000 can't keep up with the large number of disk
requests.
I wondered about a virus or worm on someone's workstation that might be
pumping large amounts of data to this network drive - but have not been able
to prove or disprove this.
Have run a server packet scan during one of these 'slow' periods, but
nothing stood out in the scan viewing in ethereal.

Most of the time the issue is corrected by rebooting the NW server, the
volume will failover to another server (will not always failover right
away - took about 15 mins Cluster status sitting at 'loading'- today had to
'offline' the pool, then migrate it back to the server - took a long time to
load.

Typically on Monitor, Current Connections is usually at 700, Open Files =
2,450 , current disk requests hover between 0- 50.

Is this too much for the MSA1000? 99% of the time all seems lively enough
on the network,
Sorry for the long post - but tried to include many details that might be
pertinent.

Any ideas?
Thanks, Graham

Re: MSA1000 and high Current Disk Requests

Please download fconfig12.exe from the file finder at
support.novell.com. Extract Config.nlm from it and copy that to
SYS:SYSTEM . On the console do LOAD CONFIG /ALL, and wait until the
output file CONFIG.TXT gets created (on NW 6.x this message only appears
on the Logger screen). Please post that file here, with any public IP
addresses and RConsole passwords edited out - you can delete the long
file listing at the end if it's too big to post. Thank you.

Re: MSA1000 and high Current Disk Requests

We have had the same issues with 2 different clients, where we were
running multiple GW nodes in a cluster (4 in each case) and the
MSA1000 just could not keep up when configured with just one tray.

What do you have connected to the MSA1000? What is the GW load type
and does this have mixed OS connections?

Re: MSA1000 and high Current Disk Requests

Yes, the NW environment is all in one tray on the MSA1000 (RAID5 - 14x146GB
SCSI disks)
We have 3 NW clustered servers on the MSA1000 with 2GB fibre going into 2 HP
(Brocade) fibre switches.

Indeed we have multiple OS's on the same SAN (The other OS is Windows2000,
Win2003 servers).

There are two MSA1000 controllers, but one is redundant (active, passive) so
everything goes through one controller (would be nice if they could allow
active/active controllers). We have 3 trays full of disks in this one
MSA1000 as well. One tray (1.8TB) is used for Netware and the other two are
Windows servers.

We use Lotus Notes 6.5 with the personal Notes files on the user's Netware
P: drive.

I have been contemplating moving the most active 1TB P: drive off the SAN
and onto a Promise Vtrak 15110 filled with SATA 400GBx15 drives which is
also connected via SCSI cables to two of the NW cluster nodes (it holds a
few more clustered volumes). My disk speed tests have shown that it is much
faster than the MSA1000 - but we intended on using it for secondary storage.

Here is most of config.txt (it sure brings out all your dirty laundry)
Our IP addresses are all internal addresses.

; This is a sample of the slp configuration file.
; Two types of entries can be made: 1) DA entries, 2) SA Register Filters.
;
; The DA entry allows static configuration of a known DA. This would be
used
; when the DA was out of multicast range and DHCP was not being used to
; configure the DA.
; The static DA configuration format is as follows 'DA <addr type>,
<addr>'.
; The first word must be "DA". The addr type is the address type.
Currently, only
; IPV4 has been defined. IPV6 will be defined in the future. The addr is
; the address specified.
;
; The following is an example of a static DA.
; DA IPV4, 130.1.1.1
;
; The SA Register Filter would be used when the administrator wanted all
services
; of a specific service type being mapped to a single scope. For example,
; the administrator wanted all "lpr" printers being registered to scope
"printer".
; The format is as follows: 'REGISTER TYPE "<type name>" to SCOPE "<scope
name>"'.
; The parser will look for REGISTER, TYPE, and SCOPE as keywords followed
by quote on
; a single line. Example:
;
; REGISTER TYPE "lpr" to SCOPE "eng"
;
; The last line must contain a line feed and char return. A semi-colon
specifies a
; comment.

Re: MSA1000 and high Current Disk Requests

There's something odd with your CPUs here, Proc1 shows as Idle and Proc2
as Enabled but there are 2 CPUs seen by NW. Check this out in firmware
and make sure Hyperthreading is disable there. Probably worth checking
out whether there's a firmware upgrade available while you're at it.

Edit config,sys and autoexec.bat as follows:

Top of file.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
files=100
buffers=30
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
End of file.
******************************************************************************

******************************************************************************
Top of file.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
@echo off
prompt $p$g
path=c:\dos
cd \NWSERVER
server -u573000000

BTW these lines in autoexec
SET MAXIMUM RECORD LOCKS PER CONNECTION = 10000
SET MAXIMUM RECORD LOCKS = 30000
are ineffective as you have no NWFS volumes, they don't apply to NSS

If the above doesn't help, then one possible problem you have is NSS
memory usage, the version you have limits itself to 1gb. The only fix is
to apply nw65sp4 and n65nss4a, and you should also remove the
-u573000000 from the server line in autoexec.bat and let it tune itself.

Also I see you have choked eDir cache down to ~64mb when the database is
83mb, was there a reason for this? If not I'd raise it to, say, 100mb or
just let it do dynamic cache sizing.

Re: MSA1000 and high Current Disk Requests

Thanks, Andrew for plowing through that large file. Interesting observation
about the CPU = idle. It may be just cosmetic. I ran the same load config
/all on another similar server and it reported the same CPU1 = idle while
CPU2 = enabled. Netware Monitor shows both CPUs being active while CPU1
usually is busiest. Hyperthreading was turned off a long time ago.

We've decided to make a change in the data path structure for our
problematic volume.

We are going to move it to another MSA1000 SAN (SAN2). This way it will
have it's own separate RAID5 set that is not shared with all the other NW
volumes, and it will be rebuilt (will create a new volume on SAN2 - use
Novell Consolidation Utility to copy everything over from SAN1, then change
the login scripts to point to the new location on SAN2.)

Hopefully we will see temporary improvements here. Will look into MSA1500G2
soon.

Regards,

Graham
