MYSQL - Congratulations Novell for causing me a LOT of work

Well DONE Novell! I can see the relationship with Microsoft is already
having it's effect. I have a client who actually USES MYSQL, so MONTHS
ago, I carefully upgraded his MySQL to version 5 because he was having
problems with Version 4

Then out comes SP6, which, seeing no really adverse comments on the Forums
about it and having this blind unswerving faith in Novell that they won't
screw up unfixably, I install SP6 on not one but THREE Novell Servers all
running.... yup you guessed it... MYSQL. Then guess what?

My client calls me in a panic. They have lost all their databases. Well
no, not quite, just that Novell a la Microsoft now, carefully OVERWRITES
the upgraded to MYSQL v5 databases with MYSQL v4. Now I have a VERY
unhappy customer and a LOT of work, so close to Christmas.

If you run MySQL DO NOT USE SP6.

WAKE UP NOVELL, you haven't been taken over by Microshite...yet!

This is why any "smart" admin would have tested this in a lab prior to
installing into production. Sounds like you didn't do what you should have
to prevent something like this from occurring, or at least make recovery
easy, and are now blaming Novell for your mistake.

Re: MYSQL - Congratulations Novell for causing me a LOT of work

Yes, Jeffrey, and any COMPETENT developer would take the trouble to check
the $%^&# version number of products he / she / it claims to support and
not backward rev them. It isn't like it's difficult to check a version
number if you are even a half-competent programmer.

Unlike companies with "Model Offices" where they test a patch until long
after the next version is released. We try to work with our customers.

I DID install the patch on my lab machine but never even dreamed to check
if MySQL would get back-revved. I always thought that crap like this was
the privilege of Mictroshite, NOT Novell. We tested all the NON-Novell
products for compatibility and the obvious thigs like NDS and ZEN, but I'm
sorry, this is not MY mistake it is NOVELL's. MYSQL is a NOVEL supported
Product. If it isn't then they should TAKE IT OUT and let us get our own.

I am FURIOUS. I have backups but then they lose data more than likely so
the only alternative is to re-install 5.x and try to keep all their data.

Re: MYSQL - Congratulations Novell for causing me a LOT of work

It's not a defense, and I WILL report it, but i assume you upgraded via the
download at MySQL.com?

That doesn't update the ProductRecord in the btrieve database (run NWCONFIG
and check the view installed products) there. So at that point there is in
fact no way (given how limited the Netware installer is) to know.

But I will report it and request that they have MySQL.com update their
instructions to include a basic IPS file update this.

Re: MYSQL - Congratulations Novell for causing me a LOT of work

In other words, the SP may be perfectly well written, but it definitely will
need the ProductRecord written correctly.

So maybe they DID read the version correctly ......

Again, please verify - check NWCONFIG and view your installed products.

Hmm on my NW65SP6 box the mysql is still at version 4 so I don't know where
you received version 5 from. How are you accessing the mysql database? Is
it with phpmyadmin. There is an issue with phpmyadmin on SP6.

Just for your information. I'm sorry your database got hosed and
hopefully you were able to fix your issue by restoring your backup.

These forums are not monitored by Novell. If you'd like to lodge a
complaint you are best to contact Novell directly. There are Novell
employees who participate in these forums but they do this out of free
will and their comments in here are their opinion and not those of
Novell.

Re: MYSQL - Congratulations Novell for causing me a LOT of work

He's saying they had previously installed MySQL v5 separately, and the
SP backrevved it to v4.

Re: MYSQL - Congratulations Novell for causing me a LOT of work

From MySQL.com Joe. Where Novell POINTS to for downloads.

I've just heard the PTB that
a) MySQL 5 is supported on NW
b) the next SP will fix the overwrite issue
