Micorsoft Office (2000 & above) slow on file saving to Novell Server

Hi everyone,

I am Jazz here. Just wonder anyone of you out there could give me some
solution on my critical issue here.

My company network is running on a mixed network environment comprised of
Microsoft Windows workgroup & Novell netware server v.4.11. All of our
clients pc running Win98 , win2000 and Win XP SP2.Our main network is
highly rely on the novell server v.4.11, and thus all client are
installed with Novell Client.

Since the launch of the Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), we have faced a
lot of problem dealing with the compatibility issue between the Novell
Client & Win XP SP2. Thanks to Novell Client ver 4.91 and its patches,
the low performance and hanging issues have resolved in most cases except
one, which has suffering me much recently.

We have a Windows 2000 terminal server(SP4) with buitt-in backborn of
Novell Netware 3.11/3.12 (a modified version of OS bundled together from
DELL). The server model is Dell Powervault NAS. Wonder anyone has similar
kind of configuration or model brought from DELL???
We make this server as Novell Binary Server(not NDS, due to its backborn
limitation) and works as company file server. MS Words, Powerpoints and
Excel files are store here. When Win XPSP2 users access those files from
network, (edit network documents, opening files are fast) Word 2000/Excel
2000/powerpoint 2000 take long time to save the file, even though the
files are small in size. And these can easily take up time range from 15
seconds to few minutes. Office 97 and below installed on XPSP2 machines
are not affect. This problem only occurred on Office 2000 & above. With
Office 2000, with the same files if I save them to the main Novell Server
v4.11, no sign of poor performance. These problem was never happened way
before the launch of Win XPSp2 and Novell Client 4.83. I have no way of
downgrading the XPSP2 to SP1 due to windows liciensing issue as there are
OEM version bundled by DELL.

However, with the same machines, if we were to uninstall the novell
Client 4.91 and replace with Microsoft Client for Novell, the issue as
mentioned above never occur.I have tested Office 2000 and Office XP, all
ok with Microsoft Client for Novell. This seems to be the solution, but
the Microsoft Client for Novell do lacks lot of friendly configuration
which found in Novell client, that we cannot afford to tradeoff.

I have try very hard to search all possible patches and knowledgebase in
Novell website to battle the problem, but still can't find any issue
realted to this. I even have all the Office patched, but still failling
to solved it.

I am losing my way. PLEASE HELP..............

thank you in advance

JAZZ

Re: Micorsoft Office (2000 & above) slow on file saving to Novell Server

hi Dave,

Would the version 4.83 client able to run properly on win XP Serbice Pack
2. I previously have version 4.9 (the version before 4.9SP2 launched),
The Novell client caused the pc to automatically reboot due to
incompatibility.

Will try to download this version from Novell website and try.
Let you know the result.

Re: Micorsoft Office (2000 & above) slow on file saving to Novell Server

cheehong,

4.83 with SP3 and its post-update should work with XP SP2. You might also
consider sticking with 4.91 and trying beta SP1...

Beta patches for 4.91 (beta can be better in some cases than production)
http://support.novell.com/filefinder/20609/beta.html

To work with NetWare 4.x and below verify you're doing a custom install with
no other components and IPX-only.

Sounds like Windows is automatically rebooting after
bug-checking/blue-screening.
You can disable the automatic reboot by going into Windows System
properties, Advanced tab, Startup and Recovery, un-check Automatically
reboot.
Can you isolate the issue to a particular file or process?

Event Viewer logs in Windows showing anything unusual?

Security or any other driver-based software like firewall, VPN, remote
management or antivirus installed and running?

Can you give us any details about the make/model of hardware, NIC and its
drivers, etc. of these workstations?

Re: Micorsoft Office (2000 & above) slow on file saving to Novell Server

hello tony.

I have no problem with the client 4.83 version on XPSP2. I have just
installed and tested same to work with version 4.91(all patches including
beta patches). Let put this rebooting after bug-checking/blue-screening
issue aside, as I can always use Novell Client version 4.83 or the 4.91.

The main focus of my problem should be the issue on the file saving using
Win Word/Excel (version 2000 & above). The problem occurred when we try
to save file from word/excel application to map drive in Novell Netware
Binary server. This server is a Dell Powervault running Win 2000 Terminal
server as main interface customized by Dell to built with Novell Netware
binary server ver 3.11/3.12 technology. Please read my initial posting of
my case for detail.

Do you have any idea of this matter? Please note taht, if I were to use
Microsoft version of novell client, the problem that suffering me don't
surfaced at all.

Hope you can help.. thank you in advance.

Re: Micorsoft Office (2000 & above) slow on file saving to Novell Server

Unfortunately I think few of us will have experience with that exact server
config with the newer Novell Clients on XP SP2. But we'll likely be able to
point you in the right direction on the Windows and Novell Client sides.

Again stick with an IPX-only install with no other components of the Novell
Client installed.
Go thru these lists and let us know which, if any, of these steps help with
your delays...

Re: Micorsoft Office (2000 & above) slow on file saving to Novell Server

Yep, I'd go along with what Tony said, basically the 4.9x clients are
geared towards IP and access to NW6.x servers, for a 4.11 server you might
as well stick with 4.83 and the IPX install. The additional options
available within the 4.9x clients are wasted on that server version.

Cheers Dave

Re: Micorsoft Office (2000 & above) slow on file saving to Novell Server

Guys,

Sorry for the belated reply. Have been busy with other projects in
office. Have roughly go through the system optimation as you all
suggested, but I don't see those factor would help in my case. The reason
behind is that the Novell server 3.11 that run on DELL PowerVault is not
a standard server delivered by Novell. Instead, it is a customized
version (OEM) with based of Novell Binary server 3.12 incorporated to Win
2000 Terminal server. According to DELL, the reason of having this
product is to workaround the high liciesing cost of Microsoft and Novell.

There is something that support my view here. For the same folder
(contents are same) shared with different network protocol would have
different outcome. The problem of slow/hang saving files from MS Office
application (ver 2000 & above)only happened on Novell share on this
Novell binary server only. It works fine with Microsoft Windows share.
Furthermore, I wouldn't have any file saving problem if thoae Novell
shared folder are located on another Novell server, which running ver NDS
4.11 (standard version)

At the moment, I seen no solution for my case. To workaround with my
problem, I remian the user network login to this server through Novell
Binary and then remap those shared folders with Microsoft mapping (net
use command) instead of Novell drive mapping. With this workaround, my
users would not have problem saving MS Office files directly from these
Office application to the map drive of the said problematic Novell server.

Would like to look forward for soluetions/rcommendations from your guys
if any.

thanks alot.
