NDS Problems

I had a power outage earlier this week and wanted to check eDir on my primary server (OES11 SP2).
Binary Version: 20804.05
Root Most Entry Depth: 0
Product Version: eDirectory for Linux x86_64 v8.8 SP8 [DS]

Running ndsrepair -T and ndsrepair -E to check synchronization resulted in the following

[1] Instance at /etc/opt/novell/eDirectory/conf/nds.conf: gmfs04.OU=server.O=GlenMar.GLENMARUMC
Unable to connect to NDS Server.
Read-only file system.

which I don't think is a good sign. I looked into the nds.conf file and checked the files in /var/opt/novell/eDirectory/data/dib - there are almost 2500 .nds files in that directory - is that normal?

I also checked the permissions on /var/opt/novell/eDirectory/data which showed

gmfs04:/var/opt/novell/eDirectory/data # ls -l
ls: cannot access ndsconfig.err: Permission denied
ls: cannot access embox: Permission denied
ls: cannot access nds-http: Permission denied
total 78
drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 71184 Nov 2 19:42 dib
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 Jan 21 2013 dsreports
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 Jan 21 2013 dstrace
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 35 Sep 28 07:50 eDirlastver.txt
?????????? ? ? ? ? ? embox
?????????? ? ? ? ? ? nds-http
?????????? ? ? ? ? ? ndsconfig.err
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6 Nov 11 13:57 ndsd.pid
drwxr--r-- 2 root root 176 Nov 11 13:57 nmas-methods
srwx------ 1 root root 0 Nov 11 13:57 s-n4ucmd

Any suggestions on where to start to try to clear up these issues? Should I just try to reinstall eDir on that server?

If you have a read-only filesystem then you have some serious issues at
the filesystem layer. You should troubleshoot that first; ignore
eDirectory until that is done.

Yeah, not abnormal. Every value in a stream attribute will create a
<number>.nds file.

Running this as 'root' and seeing those issues indicates some kind of
filesystem corruption. This officially falls in the "bad" category. Try
checking on whether or not your filesystem is really read-only. If not,
or if you can get it non-read-only, see about checking on these
permissions again, but I'd guess you're probably going to need to
reinstall the box entirely to guarantee your filesystem is okay. You may
want to do some disk checks too before reinstalling in case the disk
itself suffered from the outage.

Start here. Fix your file system (fsck).

Yes, that's normal.

Re: NDS Problems

I was paranoid about what may have been messed up on my disk so I removed the server from the Tree and then rebuilt it.
