NSS missing wwwrun eDir user

Hello,

I just installed two brand new boxes with SLES 10 SP1 and OES 2. Installs
went just fine. NSS is working wonderfully.

However, for both boxes, I do not have a wwwrun user or wwwgroup in eDir.
The user exists in /etc/passwd

According to the documentation:

-----------------------------------------
H.1 System Users Created on Linux

Table H-1 System Linux Users

Username Entry in /etc/passwd
Associated Service
iprint iprint:x:UID:GID::/var/opt/novell/iprint:/shell
iPrint daemons
novell_nobody novell_nobody:x:UID:GID:Novell System User:/opt/novell:/shell
CIMOM
novlxregd1 novlxregd:x:81:81:Novell XRegD System
User:/var/opt/novell/xtier/xregd:/shell XTier registry daemon
novlxsrvd1 novlxsrvd:x:82:81:Novell XSrvD System
User:/var/opt/novell/xtier/xsrvd:/shell XTier service
wwwrun1 wwwrun:x:30:8:WWW daemon apache:/var/lib/wwwrun:/shell
Apache

1 When Novell Storage Servicesâ„¢ (NSS) is installed on the Linux server,
these users are removed from the local system and created as LUM-enabled
users in eDirectory. This is required because these users must have access
to NSS data, and all NSS access is controlled through eDirectory.
-----------------------------------------

When NSS was installed, should it not have deleted the wwwrun user from
/etc/passwd and LUM enabled that user?

I tried running the NSS install again through YaST but it did do that.

What step did I miss on the install? What do I need to run to create the
wwwrun user and www group in eDir?

Thanks!

Matt

Re: NSS missing wwwrun eDir user

Matt,

yes, I think those users should have been migrated to edir during the installation. That migration process should be logged in /var/log/YaST2/y2log. So you can search there in for the namgroupadd and the namuseradd command which were responsible for that. Maybe you also have a view lines below a error message why that didn't worked.

I would say it is save to rerun them with the exact same options. You should only be prompted for the admin password. After that process succeeded check if the local user and group was automatically deleted, otherwise I would do this manually.

Here is a sample from a oes 2 installation at our site.
Please take in mind that our users might have different uids, gids, a different admin account was used, a different edir container was used and so on. I just want to show how those commands look like:

Re: NSS missing wwwrun eDir user

Matt,

first lets try to solve the problem for the www group and if that works we will do the same for the user.

Can you please check and post the guids and the other settings for the www group ?

cat /etc/group | grep www

And can you please post the full output of the namgroupadd command ?

After that I would make a backup copy of the /etc/group file and delete the line with the www group. It's still in the backup, so no problem about it.
Then rerun the namgroupadd command and see if it works. If not, please post the full output of the namgroupadd command as well as the log entries that might be created for it in the /var/log/messages.

I believe that is correct?

I copied the command directly from the Yast log and ran it:

I backed up /etc/groups and deleted the www group. When I reran the
namgroupadd command I got the exact same error message as before. The
/var/log/messages files has no messages (nothing for the last twenty
minutes).

Since my other two OES servers also have lost their wwwrun user, I have
tried this on them as well with the same results. I'm guessing if we fix it
on one, I can fix it on the other two. But what caused all three to fail?
hmmm..

Re: NSS missing wwwrun eDir user

Matt,

is it possible that you have changed the uamPosixUidNumberStart and uamPosixGidNumberStart values in the Unix Config Object in the edirectory and that those starting values are above eg. guid 8 ?

The error message "Invalid id Range" would make sense if this is the case.

Can you please check and come back ?

Re: NSS missing wwwrun eDir user

My Unix Config Object has:

uamPosicGidNumberStart: 600
uamPosicGidNumberEnd: 65500
LastAssigned Group Id: 644
Group ID deleted Map:
FF7FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFDFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF00
0000000007FFFFF... (rest are all F)
and

uamPosicUidNumberStart: 100
uamPosicUidNumberEnd: 65500
Last Assigned User Id: 645
User ID Deleted Map:
FFFFFFFDFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF4BFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF00
0000000003FFFFFFFFFF... (rest are all F)

These *may* have been changed a year ago when I was having tons of LUM
troubles on a different server. I followed some TIDS back then to make some
corrections and maybe they never got changed back??

What should they be?

Re: NSS missing wwwrun eDir user

Matt,

the start numbers should be 0.

So the namgroupadd tries to add a group with gid 8 whereas the config says they only may start with 600. Thats why you get the error.

After changing that values for group and user I would wait a view minutes before running the namgroupadd command.

But I think this time it will work !

Re: NSS missing wwwrun eDir user

Matt,

I forgot to mention that you might change the start values after the nam commands back where you had them right now. But please do not forget to lower them whenever you install a new oes server !

The start number might vary depending your installation scenario. I checked a fresh oes 2 installation and both were at 0.

Re: NSS missing wwwrun eDir user

Ranier,

IT WORKED! I successfully added the www group.

I wanted to repeat this procedure to add the wwwrun user, but I do not see a
namuseradd command anywhere in the yast log files for wwwrun. I did find
one for the novlxtier user. Can you check your log to see if there is a
numuseradd command for wwwrun? Also, am I correct in thinking that I must
delete the wwwrun user from /etc/passwd? (There is no novlxtier user in
/etc/passwd)

Should I add the novlxtier user?

THANKS! I think we are really close to fixing this!

Re: NSS missing wwwrun eDir user

Matt,

good to hear that.

Yes I have a namuseradd for that wwwrun user. It looks like this:

namuseradd -a 'cn=admin,o=cont' -x 'ou=edir,o=services' -d /var/lib/wwwrun -g 'cn=www,ou=edir,o=services' -u 30 -o wwwrun

If you put in the correct admin, containers and the uid this should work for you.

The novlxtiert should also be in edir but requires the novlxsrvd group. Please have a look for the namgroupadd command for that group before you add the novlxtier user.

And last but not least there is a admingroup in edir that also might be created where the edir admin is a member of. But that might be configured in the imanager / linux user management task.

And yes, you have to delete the local user and group accounts when the user is lum enabled and created in edir. For users it has to be removed from /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow, for groups it has to be removed from /etc/group.

Just another tip you can also check the y2log for nam commands on your first oes server where the installation might have worked.

Re: NSS missing wwwrun eDir user

YES!!! I added the wwwrun user!

Now I want to make sure that I got the rest of the users added as well.
Looking closely at the logs, I see some error messages that indicate that
other users *should* have been created, but were not because the namgroupadd
command failed. I think I also need a novlxregd and a novlxsrvd user. Is
that correct? And how about a novlwww user?

Can you do one last favor and grep your yast log for the novlxregd and
novlxsrvd user?

Ranier, thanks for all of your help! I'm finally going to be able to move
my web server root directory back to an nss volume!

THANK-YOU!

Matt

Matt,

good to hear that.

Yes I have a namuseradd for that wwwrun user. It looks like this:

namuseradd -a 'cn=admin,o=cont' -x 'ou=edir,o=services' -d/var/lib/wwwrun -g
'cn=www,ou=edir,o=services' -u 30 -o wwwrun

If you put in the correct admin, containers and the uid this shouldwork for
you.

Re: NSS missing wwwrun eDir user

Matt,

Sounds like we come to and end and everybody is happy :=))

I do not have a novlwww user anymore on oes 2.
That was on oes 1 the user for novell web apps.

Here is the novlxtier group:

namgroupadd -a 'cn=admin,o=cont' -x 'ou=edir,o=cont' -W LX-OES201 -g 81 -o novlxtier

and here is the novlxregd user:

namuseradd -a 'cn=admin,o=services' -x 'ou=edir,o=cont' -c 'Novell XRegD System User' -d /var/opt/novell/xtier/xregd -g 'cn=novlxtier,ou=edir,o=cont' -s /bin/false -u 81 -o novlxregd

Please again take care that you adopt the edir context, admin and uid and gid.

Re: NSS missing wwwrun eDir user

Ranier,

THANK-YOU again! For all three of my servers I now have the www and novlxtier groups and the wwwrun and novlxregd users. I can log in with any LUM enabled user.

THANKS!

Matt
