Need to map to a Netware server from clientless Windows 7

Hi
I am building a reference machine that is going to be deployed to all the machines in my organization. I am running the sysprep in audit mode to do my build. I need to map to a netware server from a clientless windows 7 build.

Is there a way to do this?. Any help would be greatly be appreciated.

I inadvertently posting this in the client forum, and I was told to post this here.

If NetWare 6.5.8 ( possibly older ) you can extend a CIFS share, which you should be able to access without the Novell Client.

Re: Need to map to a Netware server from clientless Windows

Thanks Bob,

I have never done a CIFS share, in netware thus far, now there is a need. Is there a TID or docs you can direct me to.

Re: Need to map to a Netware server from clientless Windows 7

It is all well explained in the NW6.5 documentation. But if you did not
do a customized install of NW it is very well possible, that it is
already installed and you just have to configure it.

But be aware, that you will not be entirely happy with WIN7 and CIFS on
Netware. I had this combo till this Sept. 2010 in use.

You will further need a still unpublished bugfix for bug 580964, which
you get by opening a SR with Novell. Without this all your users will
get nasty explorer hangs, if they use explorer to browse for files on
the NW server, which can ony be solved via restarting explorer.exe on
your Win7 machine.

Re: Need to map to a Netware server from clientless Windows

Howdy

I have this problem as well and am just about to install SP8 (currently on SP7) and "N65NSS8c". just wondering if anyone knows if the "bugfix" for 580964 is included in "N65NSS8c"? I don't want to pay for a support request unless I have to but it will take me a couple of days to patch servers and don't want to lose the time if I need to raise an SR anyway?

the "Cifs.nlm" in "N65NSS8c" is version 3.27.03 which does seem to indicate it is the same file as that referred to by Michael kimble in http://forums.novell.com/novell-product-support-forums/open-enterprise-server/oes-platform-independent/oes-native-file-access/399607-netware-cifs-windows-7-further-problems-post2009208.html#post2009208

Thanks for any advice

As far as I know it is not included in any publicly available patch.
But I am not sure as I don't have a NW Cifs server anymore - only a
simple NW NCP and GW server is left, which will go to either Linux or
Linux OES or Windows this year.

Re: Need to map to a Netware server from clientless Windows

Thanks for the prompt reply W. Prindl. I'll just patch them and see how it goes? Will post any worthwhile results for anyone else still trying to do this.

cheers

Unfortunately, it's not. And, AFAIK (I may be wrong here), the available
fix you get when you open an incident is not based on NSS8c, but NSS8b
instead.

Re: Need to map to a Netware server from clientless Windows

Update for anyone else trying to get Windows 7 to access CIFS Shares on NW 65

  1. Updating to NW65 SP8 and latest NSS Patch (N65NSS8c) did improve reliability of browsing and accessing the shares but still had the "explorer hang" problem
  2. I did need to log a Support request for the Bugfix 580964 cifs.nlm and this appears to have resolved the issue. The Bugfix is definitely not available for download.
  3. The "bugfix" nlm only works on N65NSS8B patch so I had to backrev from N65NSS8C (baasically reinstall over the top)
  4. Everything is working fine though we are still in test. So far so good

    Many thanks for your assistance

    Cheers
