Netware 6.5 SP6

Applied Netware 65 sp6 to an sp3 serever. Now it will not boot, last
message is replaying transaction tracking record. Will not activate NSS
pools. Appears to be the same as TID3463889. NSS is unresolved and will
not load. Server then shuts down on abend. Manually, this happens
loading stage 1. The above TID sugests "Down server Upgrade. Are there
any other options? Is there another fix? We are down.

So far, yes.

*That* doesn't sound as above TID at ala though, but rather suggests
version mismatches of some sort, e.g a partial upgrade.

Err, where are you reading this? I don't see it suggesting a down server
upgrade, and it wouldn't make much sense in the case of the TID.

Does this help?

Yes, there is no need to do a down server upgrade if you really have this
problem. You can proceed as follows:

- boot your server into DOS without starting NetWare (you can for example
press <ESC> at the moment NetWare starts up)

- now start NetWare manually using the option
server -ns

- now load the HAM driver for your disk controller manually

- activate the SYS pool (in case it isn't activate yet)

- use the command:

nss /notransaction=SYS

- now try to mount the SYS volume to see if you can do it without abend.
E.g.

mount SYS

- now start your server normally, and delete the file UXACTION.LOG at the
root of your SYS volume.

- now you can enable transaction on SYS again with

nss /transaction=SYS

Re: Netware 6.5 SP6

I posted this from memory, but it looks like this is not enough. I don't
remember how I once did this without reverting the NSS modules.

Based on my experiments, I came up with the following recommendations:

Marcel, thanks for your help. I am back up and runninng.
I did do the nss /NoTransaction=sys but the server would still abend and
shut down. I was now getting a different message though. Instead of
Replaying transaction log file and a warning about an abend, I was now
just getting a message saying that "The running process would be
suspended, and it would shut down. The last line above that
was "Processing volume purge log". I brought up the server with
-z"/poolautodeactive=sys and than ran an nss /poolrebuild=sys /purge. I
could then mount the sys volume, and the other volume. Downed the server
and it came back up fine. Thanks for all your help.

Well, that looks like you had a different NSS related issue. I have seen
problems like that in the past as well where some lingering NSS corruption
caused newer NSS versions to abend.
Anyway, I'm glad you got your problem fixed and thanks for reporting back.

FYI: I had a similar experience: Server would abend when replaying
transaction log for SYS volume. Since I was short on time and did not
have the SP5 files available (still downloading!) I tried jdunbar's
suggestion. The server seems to be coming up okay, but I am still having
an issue with something causing an error -- I think it might by the Canon
NDPS gateway, since that's the only thing obviously missing at the moment.
I'll post something further if I find out more.....
