Newb CIFS Q...

Will CIFS work across the internet to allow remote access to files?

i.e. Map a drive to \\<server-ip>\share ??

Or is this better achieved via; FTP, Ifolder, or Netstorage?

Thanks.

Re: Newb CIFS Q...

Client-less access that is. I know you can map via the example I gave with NC.

it should work as long as the server-ip is a routable ip address. Is it
safe on the other hand, i don't know. SMB is quite a 'chatty' protocol.

Re: Newb CIFS Q...

Whenever I try it I get a log in prompt. No user name or password combination works. I am logged into the local machine with the same user name and simple password as on the server.

What could be the issues?

Re: Newb CIFS Q...

Sabyre,

I assume you are referring to the use of SAMBA in which case you need to create the SAMBA user as well, your regular user will not work natively with SAMBA

smbpasswd -a <username>

Re: Newb CIFS Q...

I was referring to Netware CIFS. Samba has not been installed to my knowledge.

In respect to a firewall; port 139 need to be open? Any others?
