OES 11 on SLES 11 along with Nagios ?

Hi!
Just asking for experiences/hints. Is ok to install bundled with SLES 11 (SP2) Nagios on same server with OES 11 (SP1) already installed?
More thanks, Alar.

Well it will work since Nagios requires the SLES part of OES not OES itself.

Now whether you should host Nagios on an OES server depends on what you
want to monitor. If you're only interested in monitoring OES services on
that one server then adding Nagios makes sense. However if you're
looking to monitor whether the server itself is available (by pinging it
perhaps) and/or other servers then it might make sense to have a
dedicated Nagios host otherwise how will Nagios notify you if the server
is down?

Note there are some OES-specific plug-ins for Nagios available @

Re: OES 11 on SLES 11 along with Nagios ?

Hi and thanks!
Well, I don't have a lot of options to get dedicated server for Nagios and don't mean to check up/down of this OES server (some services, sure), also a option to have a checking possibility for few hundreds other devices. No, this SLES/OES is not a heavy loaded, currently, and when it will be (doubt of that), sure, move out from this one. Also, a little bit curiosity for using Nagios bundled with SLES. 😃 Does Nagios add heavy load?
So, I just check needed soft from Software Management on SLES and ... good to go? Doesn't it interfere any OES services?
More thanks, Alar.

Ahjaa, also Web-interface option is good to have, does it going ok along with OES?
Yes, main goal is to have check for OES (just a try) and some other devices mostly for up/down.

Well I've not added Nagios to an OES server but it certainly didn't tax
a regular workstation box running openSUSE so no reason it should tax a
server with SLES+OES. Of course if you were checking services every few
seconds it might be a bit busy.

As for adding web pages/hosts to an OES server yes that's no problem as
OES can handle that.

You'll need to install both nagios and nagios-www packages, the latter
which will add nagios.conf in your /etc/apache2/conf.d directory to set
up the /nagios URL on your OES server.

Re: OES 11 on SLES 11 along with Nagios ?

Hi again!
Well, have some issues (httpd_check does not work as expected), shared this via Nagios forums, they suggested this old 3.0.6 version to build-up newer version ... I'm not so good to build something by my own, is there a (controlled and tried out) way to upgrade this bundled version?
More thanks, Alar.

Hi Simon,

Thanks for the pointer. I tried visiting the URL for the zip file, but it doesn't take me to the file. I'm curious to know if you may still have a copy that I can get from you. Thanks!

We run Nagios as well against our OESxx servers.
Note that we didn't use the plugin because the plugin basically interfaces with httpstkd, which is a single point of failure. Plus we didn't really see much benefit to it. But your mileage may vary.

I think we only monitor:
timesync
ldap/ndsd (if either of those go down, so does your httpstkd in terms of actually working)
disk space usage of the various partitions

Unfortunately I don't think I've got a copy of the file but I've
reported the broken download to Novell so hopefully they can fix.
