OES11 fails to run Cron tasks & unable to access via VNC

I have issues with 2 OES11 Servers which have been running fine for about 5 years!
I know OES11 is out of support & both havn't been patched for a bout 2 years

all of a sudden I have two issues

(1) Cannot access via VNC - but fine for a few hours after reboot!
I can access via ssh/putty

(2) Cron tasks don't run

With One of them I have setup an hourly task which simply does a "ls /home"

I have setup a Reboot (out of working hours) at 03:30,7:30,18:30 & 23:30 & the server seems to "behave"
Physical server with 8Gb RAM running GW

The 2nd Server - only practical to reboot once a day & cron trasks won't run until rebooted manually via ssh
(this one is a Virtual Machine - with 8Gb RAM running GW2012)

I have looked at logs but not seeing anything obvious i.e. out resource or authentication failure
(To be honest I'm not sure what I'm looking for in the logs!)

I any pointers would be appreciated I guess raising a ticket would be pointless as Support will only point to Unsupported nature of OES11.

Re: OES11 fails to run Cron tasks & unable to access via VNC

- are the server certs still good?
- drive space?  especially on root, but are any of them tight
- memory usage, especially is swap being sucked up?
- CPU, is something spinning out of control and/or going zombie?

for details on how to check some of this see my checking Linux resource usage page

if your servers' ganglia is working, check it as well at http://serverIP/gweb to watch resource usage, saves having to watch top to see a trend.

how much is in /tmp  and /var/tmp     sometimes just clearing out the older stuff is a good thing to do. somewhat automatable with /etc/sysconfig/cron
having a real number of days for
MAX_DAYS_IN_TMP=      and
MAX_DAYS_IN_LONG_TMP=

Re: OES11 fails to run Cron tasks & unable to access via VNC

Sorted. All working now for 2+ weeks

After re-registring everything just works. Did nothing technical.

I call that DELIBRATE SARBOTAGE by MF/Novell.... through dodggy hidden code. Very bad practice. Is that even legal???
If a message poped up saying I need to re-enter registration details, that would be acceptable.

ah yes, the hidden time bombs buried through out our civilization, such as expiring credit cards through expiring SSL certs. Newer versions of OES have gotten a whole lot better at keeping the registrations rolling, but that doesn't stop me from tracking when they expire so that I check them.

to Track, I keep a text file of all the different things that are date specific and have it as one of the active tabs on one of my multi-tab text editors (NoteTab for this, could also be Notepad++ or others like it)
