OES11 to OES15sp1 Upgrade

Hello,

I have 3 server to upgrade from OES11 to OES15sp1. As it appears I will have to upgrade them 3 times - OES11 to OES11sp1, OES11sp1 to OES11sp2, OES11sp2 to OES15sp1 - I'm wondering where I can find upgrade documentation for these older versions of OES11. The current documentation appears to only show information for OES11sp3.

Also wondering if anyone has run into specific issues in performing in-place upgrades with the DVD's and what tasks I may need to perform to make sure everything goes well.

Thanks for any insight

Dan

If you scroll down a bit on page https://www.novell.com/documentation/oes11/ you will find a section called "previous releases" were you can download docs for older version.

Thanks Thomas. That helps.

Any insight on tasks to ensure a smooth upgrade?

Yes you will need to upgrade OES11 to later versions before you can then
go to OES2015 SP1 but another (supported) option is OES11 -> OES11 SP1
-> OES11 SP3 -> OES2015 SP1.

Archived copies of documentation, including upgrade guides, for previous
releases of OES11 are available @

I think the most important thing to note is to make sure that you
upgrade both OES and the underlying SLES at the same time with supported
combinations - don't upgrade one without the other otherwise you will
break things. So to expand on the either of our suggested upgrade paths:

OES11/SLES11 SP1 -> OES11 SP1/SLES11 SP2 -> OES11 SP2/SLES11 SP3 ->
OES2015 SP1/SLES11 SP4

or

OES11/SLES11 SP1 -> OES11 SP1/SLES11 SP2 -> OES11 SP3/SLES11 SP4 ->
OES2015 SP1/SLES11 SP4

Personally I'd go for the latter as it takes care of upgrading the
underlying SLES before you get to OES2015 SP1.

If you don't have anything "odd" then upgrade should go smoothly.

DVD upgrades have always gone smooth for me, just make sure certs are valid and not expired, time sync ok and a an overall healthy tree.
Are these virtual on physical machines, if they are physical then you might run into driver issues since the kernel changes?

Re: OES11 to OES15sp1 Upgrade

Thanks Simon.

I'm noticing in the OES11sp1 documentation supported upgrade paths include OES11 to OES11sp2 directly. Then I could go from OES11sp 2 to OES15sp1, cutting down on the number of upgrades I would need. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks.

These are VM's so should be good on drivers. I will be sure to check certs, time sync and eDir health, thanks.

Ah yes I'd forgotten that you can go directly from OES11 to OES11 SP2
which helps you out here. So a revised upgrade path from OES11 to
OES2015 SP1 is

OES11 -> OES11 SP2 -> OES2015 SP1

Much simpler and fewer chances of a problem as less upgrades involved.

Since these are virtual machines you could snapshot them ... except
eDirectory doesn't take too well to restoring individual servers.
