What version (and SP) is on the servers? Are you using IPX, TCP/IP,
or both for comms? If IP is in the mix, can you connect by entering a
server IP address in the Server field in the Advanced section of the
login? If, how do you have SLP configured?

We have the same problem. I have narrowed it down to happening only on
the 4.91 clients (both Windows 2000 sp4 & XP SP2) and neither of the 2
4.91 client patches helped. I should also add that the problem only
seems to happen if logon is attempted as soon as the logon box is
available. If the computer sits for a bit (I don't know how long it
takes) before logging in is attempted, it works fine.

Our environment is Netware 6.5 SP3 and we also have a Microsoft Windows
2000 Active Directory domain.

I have upgraded the client to 4.91 on about half of our 22 desktops, so I
would prefer to find a fix than have to uninstall 4.91 and install 4.90
again.

Thanks for the TID tip, but that doesn't fix it.

I should clarify that the 4.91 updates/patches I have tried are the
491_pka & 491_nwgina_3

Next idea?

Back to my response to dcastelino:

With the added question, have you pointed to the Scope and DA in the
Service Location tab of the client properties?

Donald,

2 Novell Netware 6.5 SP3 servers

Servers have TCP/IP and IPX, the plan is to remove IPX as soon as I have
IPX off of all the clients, which I was doing in conjuction with
upgrading the Novell Client to 4.91 when I descovered this problem.

Entering the IP address of the server instead of the name in the advanced
section of logon does appear to avoid the problem (tree or server not
found...)

It looks like an SLP issue, I am currently reading up on SLP starting
with TID 10062474 SLP Design & Implementation Guidelines. Any ideas
would be appreciated.

Here is what I know so far on our SLP:
None of the three SLP objects exist anywhere in our NDS tree.
SLP.NLM & SLPTCP.NLM are loaded
DISPLAY SERVICES returns 16 services

Looking at our main server in Remote Manager SLP section:
Scope list: default
SLP.CFG: only sample info, eveything is commented out
Discovered Directory Agents:
Multicast - Disabled
DHCP - Enabled
Static cfg - Enabled
Disable Multicast after DHCP, Static - Enabled
Internal Service agent Services: 8 of the same 16 services listed by
Dirsplay SLP Services at the console

You need to set up SLP with a Named scope. See TID 10059981

on how to do this.

Thanks for your reply. Is there any reason I could not instead
configure SLP with an UNSCOPED Directory Agent as outlined in TID
10060296 ?

We are a small shop and the entire LAN is a single unrouted subnet,
about 25 workstations and 2 Netware servers (plus some Microsoft servers).

BTW - I am glad to see that the TID writers have a sense of humor (TID
10059981 - scope pun intended)

UNSCOPED does not work with NW 6.x.

Interesting. It should work without Directory Agent. Care to post the
output from typing SLPINFO /ALL from a workstation *before* implementing
the SCOPED scope design that Donald suggested ? Just curious.
