Recommendations for backup of virtualized OES 2018 environme

I have a VMware virtualized infrastructure with a vCenter appliance, Micro Focus appliances and a number of OES 2018 servers. The majority of my data is unstructured and on NSS volumes on OES 2018 servers. I need to be able to:

1) Backup the virtualized environment (VM's [about 40] and hosts [5] if possible)

2) Restore single files on the file servers

3) Restore whole virtual machines

4) Get the data off site, preferably not to a "cloud" backup solution

5) Not break the bank

I have looked at Datto, but apparently they cannot backup the vCenter appliance.

I have looked at Storagecraft, but they cannot do file level restores for NSS, they only support NTFS, Ext 3 and Ext 4.

Infrascale (our current solution that is running out of space) no longer has the ability to use removable hard drives to get data off site.

So I am reaching out to the community and trying to see what is used by "real" people and now just what the vendors say.

There are many solutions: some commercial; some home grown. When
talking to admins, there are probably as many different opinions as
there are admins. When it comes right down to it, the best solution
depends to a large extent on the specific situation.

These two are certainly worth looking at although they may not meet
criterion #5.

Are you really taking removable drives off site? IMO, there are a
number of better off site solutions that don't require transporting
physical media. One simple solution involves backing up to a local NAS
device and use the NAS to replicate the data (via rsync?) to another
similar device at an off site location or even to a cloud storage
provider.

Check out the Barracuda Backup Appliance. Re: criteria 4 - I know one
method of long term storage is to go to the cloud. But I don't
remember whether you could optionally go to another device at a
different location. Good tech support. Worth looking into. I use
it.

Also double check OES 2018 support...I'm still on 2015 SP1, but it
works great with that version.

Re: Recommendations for backup of virtualized OES 2018 envir

VEEAM requires a Windows server I believe, that is 2 strikes against it and cost may be the third, I will see When I talk to them tomorrow.

The trouble I am seeing is that NSS is not a file system recognized or supported by most vendors of virtual backup. This begins to cast doubt on its (NSS) long term validity.

Do you have downtimes (at night)? Copy your eDir-VM when they are down.
Then compress the files and store. (Maybe store encrypted and copy to a
cloud store.)
For file backup use rsync or nbackup during non productions times. If
file rights are neccessary use the migtools to manage this.

If there are no downtimes than use dsbk for eDir backup (e.g. with an
separate storage for backup and RFL data)

Do not(!) snapshot or clone eDir hosts during operation (and bring them
back later). You have to repair the eDir afterwards.

This solutions needs a litte scripting for comfort but they are possible
without additional paid software.
