Slow NSS copy speeds

We were having problems with moving files from workstations to servers and I.T. claimed that my NSS (Netware) servers were slower than my windows servers at copying files. When I looked into the situation more I found that when I copied from a NetWare server it was taking longer for the file to start to send any data, where the windows servers would start to send the data immediately. Are there any tweaks or something wrong with my installation? I have been running this same install of NetWare for about 4 years but lately I have been noticing other problems that may be related. When a person opens or saves a auto cad drawing there are problems with the file being reported as not a AutoCAD file or the file in use. Could these problems be related?

Thanks
Dave.

What version of NetWare and NSS do you have running? I recall a TID that had a script of some sort for tweaks to NSS...you may want to check that out.

At some point, you will want to upgrade to both SLES and OES2. These are proven and supported as the way to go for modern data storage and transfer.

I am using netware ose2 sp8 and SLES10. I am having issues with both but mostly Netware.

Thanks

You may have more of a networking problem than an NSS problem. You can use TSATEST.nlm to test out the server's file and TSA systems, if you get good speeds there the problem is likely outside the server's disk channel. To prove NSS you could create a NWFS volume and test with that.

Are the NW and Windows server hardware the same? Same network?

That said, NSS is slower when copying lots of small files, due to the journalling overhead.

Yes, the servers are all power edge 2950's with the same hardware.
I will try what you suggested.

Thanks

Here are the time I got from TSATEST do these look good? there were about 20 files that ranged from 132MB to over 3GB.

Due to the formatting being lost I'm having a hard time reading those figures, but it looks like your max read time is nearly half a second, which is pretty high. Mind you if that's the 3gb file I guess that's OK.

On the console do LOAD CONFIG /jumba1se, and wait until the output file CONFIG.TXT gets created (on NW 6.x this message only appears on the Logger screen). Please post that file here, with any public IP addresses and RConsole passwords edited out. Thank you.

If the files are compressed, this can account for the delay. Virus scanners on the server and client side. Client / server side caching. All these impoact performance.

Obviously a packet trace of the first few seconds of the copy will tell you if there is a real delay.

; This is a sample of the slp configuration file.
; Two types of entries can be made: 1) DA entries, 2) SA Register Filters.
;
; The DA entry allows static configuration of a known DA. This would be used
; when the DA was out of multicast range and DHCP was not being used to
; configure the DA.
; The static DA configuration format is as follows 'DA <addr type>, <addr>'.
; The first word must be "DA". The addr type is the address type. Currently, only
; IPV4 has been defined. IPV6 will be defined in the future. The addr is
; the address specified.
;
; The following is an example of a static DA.
; DA IPV4, 130.1.1.1
;
; The SA Register Filter would be used when the administrator wanted all services
; of a specific service type being mapped to a single scope. For example,
; the administrator wanted all "lpr" printers being registered to scope "printer".
; The format is as follows: 'REGISTER TYPE "<type name>" to SCOPE "<scope name>"'.
; The parser will look for REGISTER, TYPE, and SCOPE as keywords followed by quote on
; a single line. Example:
;
; REGISTER TYPE "lpr" to SCOPE "eng"
;
; The last line must contain a line feed and char return. A semi-colon specifies a
; comment.

Havent dont a packet trace, but I have noticed that when I copy from a server and use the window 7 monitoring tools out of controll panel I can see that my windows servers start sending data almost right away at full speed and the netware server seem to take about 10 seconds to even start but when it does all the speeds are the same. But the netware server has many no transmit times. It will send data for a second and wont send data for a second at a stedy pattern.
