Slow folder access from Windows Clients

We have an issue with some clients with Windows XP running the 4.91SP5 client that experience a 5-20 Second delay when first accessing their home directories. Once they access their folders the first time, subsequent access times are normal for a while then the issue returns. The clients are running IP only (No IPX/SPX). Any suggestions? The server is running SLES/OES 11.

Some clients ... is it always the same ones, and if so to they get it always? What do they have in common - same physical location, accessing same server mappings, different SLP settings, same workstation model?

Do make sure they all have the post SP5 patch IR 1 NOVELL: Downloads - Novell Client 4.91 SP5 for Windows (IR1)

Furthermore to Andrew's questions, if they log out and login again, does the delay occur? Or occurs after a workstation restart? And how is the access made? ie via Explorer "searching" or a mapped drive or? Could largely be related having to "extract" the file icons for use with Explorer.

Packet trace time. There is a bad bug in Windows which will show ityself
if the domain name in the registry si blank. Windows will try to acces
_ldap_tcp.blank and depending on the answer it gets saturate the network
with retries for 20..60 seconds.

Look under
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters]
for "Domain"
