Subnet Pool - problem

Facts: NW6.0, sp3. DHCP 1.0.7 DHCPSRVR 3.12.06

As posted earlier, we are assigning addresses for two SARs
(192.168.5.x-200 and 192.168.6.x-200) from one server. The two SARs
comprise a pool.

The server has two IP addresses bound to the same NIC (a new Intel
Pro/100S), 192.168.5.1 and 192.168.6.1. [When running "config" at the

server console, only one of the IPs is displayed. Is this normal?]

Problem: The 5.x SAR has stopped handing out addresses. All
workstations, even those with manual assignments on the 5.x subnet,
are
grabbing addresses from the 6.x SAR. Checking the DHCP Options tab
for
the 6.x subnet, I found corruptions in the DA and SCOPE settings. The

problems were corrected and dsrepair run. The server holds the Master

of root, where all DNS/DHCP object are. Still the 5.x subnet is not
assigning IPs.

I've read the thread by Vernon on 9/23/03 re: 100% utilization, and,
in
fact, saw 100% utilization briefly this morning, but it quickly
subsided.

(As an aside, this problem causes another problem wherein Windows
machines that are grabbing an IP from the 6.x subnet are unable to do
a
Windows drive mapping to a Windows server on the 5.x subnet.)

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

-Carol

Yes. You can see the additional address with the 'display secondary ipaddress' command.

As for the pool, since your Subnets are local to your server, you
should
not need a Subnet Pool defined. It doesn't seem that this would cause

the problem you're seeing, but it might as well be setup properly as a

troubleshooting step.

I presume you've tried restarting DHCPSRVR?

Is routing enabled on the server? You need a router somewhere between

the 2 logical subnets.

Thanks. All three IPs are displayed (there's a second card for
the backbone)

I'll remove it to see what happens.

I've unloaded and reloaded. Have even restarted the server.
No change

Routing is enabled. RIP is enabled. Only the static route to
the BorderManager server is defined.

Can you ping across the subnets? By IP addresses? By host names?

Yes. We can ping across the subnets by IP and host name.

I removed the subnet pool object; still no change. I then recreated
the subnet pool object, because the idea is to roll over to the 6.x
SAR
when the 5.x SAR runs out of addresses.

Then I deleted and recreated the SAR. Still no change.

Attached is the -d3 log.

Compounding all of this is the fact that I'm having problems with
version 6.0 of the management console. I installed the 4.9 client
and vers. 6.0 of the console on my primary workstation (XP Pro with
all
of the latest patches). Let's call it workstation A. The console
would
not launch. The first time I tried to launch it, the following error

was returned: "LA002: Fail to create NDS context." (The error code
is
mentioned in TID 10086101, which says to apply vers. 6.0.) Thereafter,

the console simply failed to launch at all.

On workstation B (also XP Pro with all of the latest patches), with
the
4.83 sp2 client and 6.0 management console, the console launched, but

only displayed one object, the subnet pool object I had just recreated

using iManager (see above). There were no subnets, no SARs, no DNS
objects, nothing. The only thing displayed in DNS was the
RootServerInfo zone. So, I installed the 4.9 client on this machine,

and, same thing, I get the "LA002: Fail to create NDS context" error.

Additionally, the NDS tree name is blank and I cannot populate it.
This
occurs upon each attempt to launch it. Then I backrevved the client
to
4.83 sp2, but still with the 6.0 management console, and, once again,
it
only displayed the newly recreated subnet pool object.

What DOES seem to work are iManager, and vers. NW5_etf05.01 of the
management console on the 4.83 sp2 client.

Is it a bad installation, or are there still problems with the
Management Console and the client?

Understood, however it should not be needed when the subnets are
locally
attached to the DCHP server -- with an address from each subnet bound
to
the same NIC, it knows the subnets are pooled without creating a
Subnet
Pool object. But again, I don't think it does any harm to have it --

it's just that it's not needed in this case.

You have a lot of repeated DHCPREQQUESTs, then DHCPOFFERs, which could

indicate a problem with the IP stack on the server -- please try
installing tcp607jrev2.exe and see if it helps. Also, if using B57 or

Q57.LAN drivers, you may need to update them.

Beyond that, unless you can point to specific problem machines (e.g.,

machines with static assignments not getting their correct addresses)
in
the log, there's not much more I can say about it.

Re: the MC, some folk have had problems with it on XP and/or with v4.9
of
the client. Specifically there may be video driver problems if using
an
ATI video card.

Thank you very much, Brad, for the education and assistance. You've made my day. I'll reinstall the TCP607jrev2.exe and try different
drivers.

Re: Subnet Pool - problem

also....

Even though you created the 6.x SAR to be teh rollover for when the
5.x SAR fills up, it doesn't always work that way. NDS has it's own
design....

Apparently your server is using the 6.x SAR as the primary SAR and the
5.x SAR will be used when ALL the addresses in the 6.x SAR have been
handed out. (which may even be opposite from how it used to be working, or
maybe the "problem" started after you created the 6.x SAR), so basically try
to fill up the 6.x range and see if the server starts handing out 5.x addresses..

Re: Subnet Pool - problem

As I recall from previous conversations with Carol, the 5.x subnet was

working fine at one point. Is there anything you know of which would

cause it to switch the primary from the 5.x to the 6.x SAR?

Re: Subnet Pool - problem

I can't think of anything that would cause it to switch, short of
deleting the "primary" and recreating it (then it would be the secondary
SAR)... But I don't know of any "natural" way of that occurring..... Very =strange

As I recall from previous conversations with Carol, the 5.x subnet
was
working fine at one point. Is there anything you know of which
would
cause it to switch the primary from the 5.x to the 6.x SAR?

Well, yesterday, while using iManager to manage the 5.x subnet, I
found
a spurious character in Option 79 (SLP services scope). Preceding the

name of the scope was a box character. In Option 78, the IP that was

supposed to be in there was gone, and three spurious IPs were there
instead. I corrected these, but restarted DHCPSRVR, but it made no
difference.

After futzing around, I ended up deleting the 5.x subnet entirely,
then
recreating it (this time without any manual assignments) and the 5.x SAR, and recycling the DHCPSRVR. That did nothing either.

This morning, using NWCONFIG, I uninstalled ver. 7.02 of the
CE100B.LAN
driver and installed the latest CE100B.LAN driver (ver. 7.03). I then

rebound 6.x to the card, reinitialized the server and restarted
DHCPSRVR. DHCP started handing out addresses from the 5.x subnet.

In iManager, however, those same spurious characters and IPs were back

in Options 78 and 79. I corrected them. We'll see they hold.

Still, however, I cannot use the Management Console, and the one that

was working (v. nw5_etf05.01 on client 4.83 sp2), is now misbehaving,

particularly with the 5.x subnet. Fortunately, iMonitor is fine.

Will continye to keep you posted.

Which, per SKye's idea, might make it the Secondary subnet in the
pool.

Or maybe the binding order determines Primary/Secondary? That may
have
been the step that fixed it... unbinding and rebinding the 6.x subnet.

Misbehaving how? When using the older MC, you might need to update
the
JRE files for it. And there's another later, but not the newest
version
-- NW5_1.SP4, which also came with NW6SP1 and I believe SP2.

Re: Subnet Pool - problem

Oh, and I forgot to mention... the spurious characters in the SLP
settings are due to version mismatches of a sort, though I've don't
recall what versions of what cause it to look OK and which ones don't.

Nevertheless, the problem is cosmetic -- you should be able to verify

that the settings are working via the client's SLPINFO command.
