Upgrade OES2015SP1 -> OES2018SP1

Jump to solution

HI,

documentation says that a upgrade from OES2015SP1 to OES2018SP1 is not supported via 'zypper dup'. Only a large go around via prepare for upgrade (more then needed for a upgrade via zypper dup), boot for the ISO and use AutoYaST ist supported. (Or even a new install.)

Is this valid yet?

OES 2015 to 2018 involves a change/upgrade of the underlying SLES Major version from sles11 to sles12. SLES Major Versions can never be upgraded via zypper dup.

additionally, is this a virtual machine or on hardware?

if virtual, there are know issues such that the virtualization vendors put up warnings such as:

"VMware does not support the installation of major update releases on an operating system as an upgrade in a virtual machine, such as Windows 7 to Windows 8 or RHEL 5.x to RHEL 6.0. VMware recommends the installation of a new major releases in a new virtual machine."

While it is likely to work, performance may well be degraded in addition to not being support (i.e. they'll try but are not committed to fixing issues)  Your mileage may vary.
