What is the preferred upgrade path for oes2 sles 10- to oes onsles11

I am not sure if this is the correct forum for this.
I need to upgrade our iPrint server to 64 bit.

Currently the our iPrint is runing on SLES10 SP3 x86_64
I'd like t move it to the latest OES on SLES 11 64.

Is an in place upgrade possible to should I set up a new SLES11 server and
migrate using the migration tool?

If you're really on x86_64 now, an inplace upgrade is absolutely
possible and usually works well. It's your call. 😉

SLES10 SP3 was supported as the base OS for both OES2 SP2 and OES2 SP3
so which are you running? Please post the output from "cat
/etc/*release" to confirm.

That's currently OES11 SP2 on SLES11 SP3.

Like Massimo has already said, yes it's possible to do an in-place
upgrade though the steps required will depend on whether you're using
OES2 SP2 or OES2 SP3.

Okay both are 64-bit so can be upgraded in-place to OES11 SP2. However
Server1 first needs upgrading to OES2 SP3 as it's currently OES2 SP2
which is not a supported upgrade path to OES11 SP2.

The upgrade to OES11 SP2 will need to be done off-line using either
physical media or a network installation source.

I note that I am advised to Download and update the latest Sentinel agent
from
http://support.novell.com/products/sentinel/secure/sentinelplugins.html.
Failing to update the agent could result in SLES 11 booting issues.

I had a look at that but I couldn't see/I don't know how to deal with this.


If I decided to install a clean server and migrate my printers:

Is it possible to just move my driver store and print manager to the new
server or do I actually have to create a new driver store and new print
manager and migrate?

If I choose the migration option I need to transfer the server ID after I've
migrated the printers yes?

I see that this is older and I don't know how you handled this but I really think that Massimo and Simon are correct. Update the OES2SP2 server to OES2SP3 and apply all OES2SP3 patches to both. Then follow the offline in place upgrade instructions. I'd recommend using physical media for OES11SP2 but network source does work.

Are you running Sentinel?

If you are you'd need to update it to the latest.

I think you can check by running
rpm -qa | grep sentinel

If it returns nothing, I don't think Sentinel is installed. Is that correct other experts?

I wish I had been on OES2(64-bit), we are in process of doing a transfer ID migration of all of our OES2SP3 servers to get onto OES11SP2.

With Transfer ID, you'll deploy the pre-migration server and install all services you want to migrate(iprint, etc.) Then you'll use the miggui tool to migrate all of those services, data, etc. and finally click the Transfer ID button to change the identity of the server. This the documented on using the miggui tool to transfer id migrate to a new server. I've had mixed results with the miggui tool over the years. Most recently migrating from an iPrint Appliance to a new iPrint appliance it really did not do a good job migrating iPrint.

An inplace upgrade is really the preferred method when available.

As always, make sure you have backups.
