Whither NW65 SP6?

Anyone know the state of NW65 SP6? I'm going to be reinstalling Netware on
an older box, a Dell PE 2400 which originally ran 5.1, and I'm wondering if
SP6 is going to appear any time soon. So far, my existing servers in the
tree are all SP4 or 4a.

Thanks in advance.

I haven't seen any hints of an SP6 in the works in TIDs I've read. Plus,
it's a bit early for SP6 in my opinion.

Also, at BrainShare there were many hints that SP6 (a.k.a. OES SP3) would
be a long time coming. There might be one when SLES releases Real Soon
Now, but I'm not trusting that.

Just my particular crystal ball.

Re: Whither NW65 SP6?

Steve, my sense is that SP5 plus the two critical updates to server.exe
and NSS will be a decent staging point on which to wait for a while.
Besides, based on history, I'd not be inclined to jump fast to a new SP
the moment it shows up...

There is no such thing as SP6 as yet. Just go for Sp5.

Is there a list of critical post-SP5 patches somewhere? Would be nice
(anyone listening?) if Novell packaged SP5_a_ for this.

TIA.

There isn't a specific list -- though you can go to:

http://support.novell.com/filefinder/18197/index.html

To get a full list of patches for 6.5.

http://support.novell.com/filefinder/18197/beta.html

Provides the list of beta patches -- which can provide something of a
heads up on other post SP5 updates which might get released (Nile,
Media Manager, and the HTTP stack update come to mind here).

I just don't see that happening with this SP.

Which are the must-have patches for SP5? That's quite a long list there.

TIA.

I believe the update to server.exe and to NSS would be the definite
update files.

Yep, you may also want to consider ncp65sp5a.exe and httpstk5.exe

And then there are the modules to backrev if you use NetStorage and
iPrint and you applied the latest iprint update to your server.

There should be an ongoing TID for this or an ongoing thread to document
what you have to undo after you update in order for your server to work.

IMHO, there should be a web page with major Netware versions listed on it,
and a hierarchy so that, when you locate your os version and SP level, you
get a list of what's recommended post-SP.

If anyone would like me to set up such a thing and update it once a week,
I'd be glad to. Either that or post a thread here once a week containing
this information.

Just my opinion.

This is where the CoolSolutions Wiki can be useful.

http://wiki.novell.com/index.php/NetWare
http://wiki.novell.com/index.php/Oesnwsp2

We don't have to rely on Novell to come up with a TID, we can write our
own, so to speak.

What's there is less helpful than this thread. What I think we need (and I
hear your point about us writing our own) is the Complete Idiot's Guide to
Installing Netware. Seeing as I'm a complete idiot and have managed this
quite a few times already, maybe I'll try my hand at it. 🙂
