Win XP shutdown after trying to Unlock Workstation

We have had three different machines exhibit the same problem:
When the user enters their password to unlock the workstation it
waits a couple seconds then Reboots/Restarts.

User can log back in, but has lost any unsaved data etc.

All the PCs have the latest 4.91 client installed.

Have tried applying TID 2971655 and b1nc491sp1.exe without success.

Any ideas

Win XP shutdown after trying to Unlock Workstation

Nigel
We have seen this on Xp and 2k machines - all nc49sp2 - the computers are
blue screening atch - u have winxp set to auto restart after error - take
this off and look at the blue screen
I seem to have addressed this issue on w2k with a dns update for novell
client - still testing so havent tried the xp machines yet

Re: Win XP shutdown after trying to Unlock Workstation

Nigel,

Sounds like Windows is automatically rebooting after
bug-checking/blue-screening.
You can disable the automatic reboot by going into Windows System
properties, Advanced tab, Startup and Recovery, un-check Automatically
reboot.
Can you isolate the issue to a particular file or process?

What SP is installed on Windows XP?
Event Viewer logs in Windows showing anything unusual?

Security or any other driver-based software like firewall, VPN, remote
management or antivirus installed and running?

Can you give us any details about the make/model of hardware, NIC and its
drivers, etc. of these workstations?

Re: Win XP shutdown after trying to Unlock Workstation

Thanks for the reply.

1 WinXP SP1 with all security patches. WE opted out of installing sp2

2 This is currently occuring on 2 varitey of PC's P4 1.5GHz 256 Ram Intel
NIC Pro/100 and DELL Optiplex GX270 Nic Intel pro/1000 1 Gig Ram 2.79GHz

I will try disabling the automatic reboot option and post the results.

Cheers

Nigel

Re: Win XP shutdown after trying to Unlock Workstation

Q. Sounds like Windows is automatically rebooting after bug-checking/blue-
screening. You can disable the automatic reboot by going into Windows
System properties, Advanced tab, Startup and Recovery, un-check
Automatically reboot. Can you isolate the issue to a particular file or
process?

A. Whith this disabled I get a “Fatal System Error” Blue screen

Q. What SP is installed on Windows XP? Event Viewer logs in Windows
showing anything unusual?

A. SP1 plus all Security patches. SP has been deliberately skipped.

Event log
Event Type: Information
Event Source: DrWatson
Event Category: None
Event ID: 4097
Date: 17/08/2005
Time: 3:48:23 PM
User: N/A
Computer: ADI-XPTEST
Description:
The application, \??\C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe, generated an

exception generated was c0000005 at address 77F90ED6 (ntdll!
RtlQueryProcessHeapInformation)

Q. Security or any other driver-based software like firewall, VPN, remote
management or antivirus installed and running?

A. McAfee Virus is the only software loaded…

Q. Can you give us any details about the make/model of hardware, NIC and
its drivers, etc. of these workstations?

A.
2 type of systems so far.
Both Pentium 4
1 Intel pro 100 Nic, 256 RAM 1.5GHZ stanadrd stuff

2 Intel pro 1000Nic, 1 gig ram 2.75GHz Dell Optiplex GX270

All worked fine until Client version 4.91.0.20050216 was loaded and the
issue is on 4 PC out of 330 (so far)
